The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Where would you like to live?
Suppose you were transported magically, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, to Skyrim. Several years before the events of the game, so there are no dragons and no Stormcloak revolt. You find it impossible to return to Earth and have to settle down. Where in Skyrim would you like to live?

Call me simplistic, but I would choose Riverwood. It's kind of idyllic and the nearby terrain is very agreeable, nice for hiking (lake, forest, river, waterfalls etc.)

Edit: I've collected the "votes" so far (Nov 10 2013), when more than one site is mentioned I have taken the first. When specific places or dungeons are mentioned, I've tried to place them in the nearest town. Only places in Skyrim qualify.
The vote is pretty spread out, it seems that the different holds have appeal to different people. (Note: Most of those that voted for Winterhold specified that they would live in the college. Makes sense as the town is pretty bleak!) No votes for Riften, Windhelm or Morthal.

Winterhold- 8
Riverwood- 6
Whiterun- 6
Falkreath- 5
Solitude- 3
Markarth- 1
Dawnstar- 1
Solstheim- 1

Oh the people of Skyrim are just shy. With a little practice they will throw those cumbersome weapons away and start hurling fire balls and summoning unspeakable horrors to rip each other apart in no time.

And thats my point, There I stand,,, With my crackers and a lighter-

Well in that case just focus on illusion magic so when random lunatics appear and call forth ice and fire form the heavens just cast muffle spell turn invisible and away you go. However if your mage is only an illusionist and a certain deranged Altmer gets his hands on a certain orb of immense power and a group of elitist mages send you to stop him and prevent the total collapse of the continent just say no and catch a boat to Akavir. I mean whats another lost continent? After the collapse of Yokuda, losing the mysterious elven continent to the south, forgeting where Atmora was and sinking the Sload argcheplago centuries ago solid land must be a dirt cheap in Tamriel. So what's another landmass obliterated? At least you are still alive with your lighter and bag of tricks.

Well, here's one vote for unloved Morthal. I find the area lovely in a creepy sort of way. There could be interesting chats with the Jarl about her 'visions' over tea. They're also in dire need of a general goods merchant, so there's a job opportunity available...

As odd as it sounds I did rather like Morthal but as a vampire I suppose that makes sense. The town has opportunity to become something worthwhile if certain adjustments were made. The characters were likable enogh. Jarl Igrod, Lami, Thorinir and somone else I can not place. I would build a house near by and use the town's close vicinity to Solitude to improve commerce. The village has a port and an alchemy shop in a region filled with reagents right? No reason why the town has to remain impoverised forever. Also I too think the Jarl would make an interesting neighbor.Just pop in the longhouse every now and again and see what ominous events lay beyond the horizon. Yes I think stabbykitteh may be on to something.
I'd probably be a Thief with the Thieves Guild if I could. :P Living in Riften. Or if not, Whiterun I'd go to, to become a Companion. :)
Morthal. It reeks of mystery you say? Well, Falkreath reeks of death and murder, Solitude cannot seem to be rid of madness and necromancy, Markarth is tainted by ancient bad blood as long as Bretons and Nords exist, and corrupt, Riften is so rotten that even the villains are falling apart, Windhelm is a bastion of prejudice (at least until its liberation), Winterhold is a touch too icy (and lacks housing) and finally Whiterun... well, I really rather like Whiterun, but I don't want my adoptive kids being put to the Ebony Blade by the Jarl's brats. Besides, the Ravencrone household seems to me to be the most interesting of all the Jarl families, the vampires will presumably be gone if I'm buying a house, and there's good fishing in the river delta for my Argonian and Khajiit friends.

Elsewhere in Tamriel... well, Elsweyr, of couse... May you walk on warm sands!

Interesting I have never thought about the various states of moral decay that the cities of Skyrim suffer. When you summarize the various societal ills that plague Skyrim the land seems to be one bad day from collapse. I think I would still visit Skyrim if I could. What is the worst that could happen? It is not like they would excute me just for crossing the border or anything.

I did say Dawnstar, and that if I couldn't live there, I'd live in Riften- I know that doesn't put Riften on the map, but, I'm surprised both didn't get more votes. Really surprised places like Falkreath did- such a dinky little so/so town- to me (I avoid going there when I can -the town not the hold), but as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm pretty sure someone said Windhelm didn't they, they said they liked the stone structure of it. I like going there but its sunny there more than in the Pale, which I don't prefer, especially with snow.

Except that old mage, and the hatefull people that dont like visiting mages and think everything magic is dark magic.

Akavir sounds interesting but the continent does not have any of the same races as Tamriel. Your experience will be quite interesting. Since I am playing as a Imperial right now lets say I pop over to the mysterious lands of Akavir, which by the way no longer has men or mer because the Vampire Snakes ate them all. The Tsaesci I think their called. I suspect no will ever hear from me again once I make land fall in Akavir.
Hmm it's not really known only suggested that Men have been eaten. It could be they themslves turned into the Vampire Lizard folk,a play on words if you like. Akavir really does need to be done cos they have Blood Magic and all sorts of wonders plus Neravarine is said to have gone there so that could be interesting to see what happened to him/her.

No wonder the book that describes Akavir is titled "Mysterious Akavir". We know virtually nothing about it.
