Jervar Killed by Death Hounds?!?
Death Hounds spawned and killed him as I was arriving. Does this mean I can't buy the Whiterun horse?

Open up the console, click on his corpse to get his ID, then type resurrect. This should bring him back to life. Let me know if you have any problems :happymeat:

In the unmodding game, characters not tagged as important can be killed in the game.

However, you can do as Pony stated and bring them back to life
