Elder Scrolls Name Origins
Alot of times when i'm creating a new character I have no idea what to name him/her. I almost always keep it lore friendly and related to the race. For instance, Imperial names are based off of Roman names. Nordic names are based off of Scandanavian/Norse names. I just need some help figuring out what the other races are based off of.

Here's a link that may help give you some ideas (and explains some of the naming conventions):

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Names

Also, a lore friendly name generator:

Just name your character Dovahkiin that way it sounds like the people are actully calling your character by name, or Bob. Bob works for any character

I've used that generator and it's pretty good. But i'm looking for the orgin of the names. I know Imperial names are based off of Roman names, but what are Redguard and Breton names based off of?

Breton names are based off of roughly medieval France and Britain, Redguards use either Middle Eastern, African, or Imperial or Breton naming conventions but generally go without last names, Argonians are Native American or use Imperial or Breton names since people usually can't pronounce their real names, Orcs are kind of their own thing, Khajiit have a nifty naming guide on UESP since the prefixes and suffixes on their names have actual meanings (but work off of a Middle Easternish convention besides that), Altmer and Dumner work off of slightly varied traditional fantasy elven names (though Dunmer tend to be more Eastern with their names), and Bosmer can either use traditional elven names or work off of the Altmer conventions.

Thanks! Anyone know what the elves are named after? Or are they like the Orcs and have their own kinda thing?

I mentioned those, Altmer, Bosmer, and Dunmer are the elven names for High, Wood, and Dark elves respectively

To a degree. French (Anton, Delphine) names are used for the "pure" Bretons, or those of High Rock. A Celtic sounding name (Eltrys, Muiri) indicates that the Breton is, in fact, a Reachman.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that. If you want to get into technicality though Reachmen and Bretons are different (races I guess) as both consider themselves to be a seperate group from the other.

Use the Bethesda method: Think of a word, and spell it backwards.

E.g. Courage = Egarouc

Great post. The race im having most trouble with are the Redguards. But you seem pretty correct when you say they are based off of Middle Eastern/African culture. The Alik'r warrior armor does look very Arabic like, with the turbans and the wide, loose-fitting pants.
