brawlers cheating!

not sure what is going on.
i challenged a guy to a brawl and once i had gotten him to half health, he just said "F%^& IT!" pulled out his axe and started swinging at me. so i start running around like a chicken with it's head cut off and all of the guards are just running around. -_-
to make things worse, i couldn't pull out my weapons or magic, so i ended up letting him kill me.

has this happened to anyone else?

Did you use a healing potion? or maybe a potion effect had worn off before the fight was finished.They dont like you using anything except fists before and during the fist fight.

nope. i've never even thought of using a potion during a brawl. the only spells i use are the bound weapons. didn't have any effects going.. it was just really random, i didn't know what happened.
it was pretty funny though

no, i wasn't using bound weapons during a brawl, he asked if i had any effects. i just said i only use bound weapons to imply that i don't cast any effects on myself.

it was that guy in morthal (i think it was morthal.. that place with the burned down house that leads to that vampire side quest). he usually hangs around the bridge and inside the tavern at night

This happened to me with Mikael and the guy you brawl with as part of the Forsworn Conspiracy. They attack with daggers, and when I'm doing those at level 1, that hurts a lot.

Maybe you hit someone else on accident and they attack you as a response, or you have some mods that caused

maybe it's a mod i have that is messing with that. there was no one really gathered around until he started chasing me around with an axe.

Using potions doesn't end brawling mode. I've sometimes used healing pots because when brawling on legendary you deal really low damage, and if you're at mid-to-low levels where your armor isn't close to max and your health pool is low there's no other way you can win a brawl. Technically you could dodge a lot trying to get in and out of reach, but it's extremely frustrating doing so for 20 minutes, and when you're about to win the fight one of the spectators (who move near randomly) gets in the way, gets hit, and screws the whole fight. I'm not trying that again.

Bear in mind that if you have a friendly NPC or a follower, and your rival hits him/her, that might trigger the full rumble escalation issue as well.

Same thing happened to me! i had to use the brawl dialogue a second time and punch him a second time in order to complete the quest. Otherwise they keep on attacking me!! This also causes trigger-happy Lydia to charge into battle and attack the helpless citizens which is frankly pissing me off. Any clues how to solve this mystery would be a great help. I currently don't have any Companion mods or brawl mods installed. Many thanks in advance!!

There is a bug in vanilla where you can't beat brawlers or they pull out a weapon, get Brawl Bugs Compatibility Edition Mod to fix it - some mods have it incorporated already, and possibly the Unofficial Patches
