Isn't Breezehome the best house you can buy?
What house beats it - without DLC; vanilla only?

You have a crapload of storage - chest, cupboard, sacks, which equals a separate storage for odds and ends, smithnig ingredients, books...

The alchemy station has a little nifty thing called apothecary satchel - which means unlimited storage of ingredients.

Seriously, within two rooms I have book storage, ingredient storage, smithnig ingredients storage, all the storage I need... meaning unlimited, and multiple chests/cupboards/sacks for organization.

An enchanter is a short walk away, and as a bonus he is also a buyer of your enchanted for levelling trinkets.

I have a ♥♥♥♥ton of merchants right outside the door, including the best in the game - the two mooks from the smithy next door (talk about close), Berethor the shifty eyed one (750 gold but meh, standard) and the old man at the Companion Forge with his 2000 gold! Also alchemist next door (750 gold), innkeeper (eh, meh) and some dude selling arrows (750 gold again).

Once I got the perk that lets me sell anything and everything to every merchant, I am set.

Why am I writing all this?

Because I bought the 25,000 gold house in Solitude and it ****ing sucks!

No storage, no chests, no sacks, **** dark, some useless mannequins you can play dress up doll with, the alchemy and enchaning station has no chests/sacks/nothing nearby to help with storage/organization...

It's a downgrade from Breezehome.

Is there a house better than old Breezy?

Vanilla and no DLC leaves a very small selection. Well pretty much just Solitude/Windhelm/Whiterun And i would indeed stick with Whiterun myself because well you have everything close, it's near the gate, close to merchants and I really like hunting on the plains outside of Whiterun so it's a suitable location, while both Solitude and Windhelm hardly have anything around them. The housing is prettier with more storage but well it's not worth the bad location.

Solitude house used to have alot of bugged containers also. No idea if that was ever fixed, either officialy or by mods.

I have mostly used whiterun of the vanilla, although overall i use Lakeview more.

If you don't mind passing through several loading screens, its the best.

Solitude is my 2nd favorit in vanilla, because it has a lot of storage, all of which is downstairs in the cellar, along with Alchemy and Enchantertable.

But Breeze Home is really the best. It also has the best location on the map. (Of course not everyone cares about passage of time in the game, while quicktraveling) And with Frostfall it also is in a nice climate zone.

There are a few interesting Mods that add houses.

"Solitude is my 2nd favorit in vanilla, because it has a lot of storage"

I have seen zero storage, meaning chests, sacks, and other containers.

I have seen some terrible made from wood, err, don't even know what to call them, you just drop your stuff into them and the stuff free falls into them (terrible).

In terms of location, Breezehome is unparalelled. Vlindrel Hall has a decent number of vendors (Two blacksmiths, an alchemist, and a general store), as does Proudspire, but their access to other amenities is limited. Solitude doesn't even have a smelter. I still like Solitude because it's so darn pretty and has okay storage for my needs, but it does lack quite a bit.
Hjerim is okay, but its floors seem so flat that I almost feel claustrophobic.

I do like Honeyside, since it also has a lot of accessible merchants (General goods, jeweler, armor/apparel, an alchemist, and a blacksmith), even though its storage options are also somewhat limited.

Severin manor is the best, though, but it requires DLC. Several vendors with unusually high-quality products (Only place I've been able to get daedric arrows so far), a nearby ebony mine, and absolutely silly amounts of storage.

I figure storage is the main point of getting a house.

No point with my compulsive book collecting without those bookshelves!

Bookshelves hold very few books - that's what the cupboard in Breezy is for!

if you want a better house, there are mods for that

Discussion was vanilla only, please.

Personally I think the Riften house is the best house. It also is close to the Thieves guild vendors.

I've only used ever Breezehome during the start of my first playthrough and thought it was far too squashed with little room/space (especially with Lydia around). Hjerim is the best one so far; plenty of space, 3 mannequins, many bookshelves, plaques, display cases and storage containers. I've only moved away from that to my Hearthfire home because it started glitching and replicating items everytime I entered.

Although if you have Dragonborn installed, the one at Raven Rock is quite the dreamhouse.

I built my own house because I didn't like any of the houses from the DLC or Vanilla choices. Breezehome was the one I abused the most when I was using Bethesda houses but I now prefer to build my own. Since the first one though, I've not bothered building any more houses because the one I have suits my needs.

The Solitude house has a safe in the upstairs bedroom

Easy to see your character is not married with no kids!

BH gets pretty crowded with a spouse, a follower, two kids and a housecarl. you can't move in there.

I don't care for Hjerim, its a vast empty cold space i find, a barn. Solitude is definitely my fave.
