Malekith the Witch King New character
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=211783345
Malekith formerly of a noble of House Hlaalo, once a person of consequence, a candidate for Hortator of the great houses of Morrowind stands alone in the darkness. Disowned by his kin, betrayed by his gods, hunted by his former comrades.

His mind brooded on the injustice of his current situation. He who had been the real intelligence behind the rise of his house to greatness, beloved of Boethiah, the right hand of Clavicus Vile, feared and respected by all his peers and matched by none. Cast out, exiled and denied the rewards which were his by right of birth and achievement by those simpering fools and their archaic trials.

He had been betrayed by the very gods he had served so faithfully at the very time he needed their support. After all that he had sacrificed, after all that he had suffered for them.

Well so be it, he did not need them. There were other gods. Gods more deserving of his service. Gods more grateful for his support. Malacath would lend a sympathetic ear to his petitions, and Mehrunes Dagon could be courted on for support if he felt it in his own interests to listen.

Even Molag Bal might be persuaded to provide assistance if he can be persuaded that their interests were aligned.

This was not a time to dwell on the injustices of the past, this was a time to plan for the vengeance to come. Malekith opened his eyes and looked around the dark and dismal room, desolate, damp and wreaking of death and decay. A skull stared back at him from a disturbed burial mound.

A fitting place to start he thought, from this place of death, so shall I go forth and spread destruction and wreak vengeance on all who oppose my rightful domination of this land.

I have an urge to play a viscous evil character to balance against my honourable Noric warrior Garik. There is only so much goodness one can tolerate;)

Hopefully, I've managed to come up with a plausible back story, though I'm not very well versed in the Elder Scrolls Lore, so any corrrections or improvements will be welcomed.

What I might do if I get time is start another video log 'Malekith's Journal' to record his path back to power.

Had a bit of scout around on Malekith last night just to see where the Alternate Start Mod had placed him in Skyrim.

My god, I couldn't have chosen a better start location if I had tried, in fact I really couldn't as I didn't even realise it existed.

It's almost like the mod read my characters profile and said to itself 'Now where would be the best place for such a character to start their story.'

Now all I need to decide is what difficulty level to set the game to. I'm tempted to rack it up quite high, but I tried 'Legendary' last night (I was playing till 4am) and got owned so perhaps thats a bit overly ambitious.

I had the same happen with one of my characters! The mod actually adds new locations and some new encounters, so each starting area is more than just a bland camp or dungeon.

Do you bother writing character profiles for your characters?

I didn't do a formal one for Garik my other character, but I envisage him to be a dispossessed Nordic warrior, probably the youngest son in a large family with no real expectation of inheretence who has come to Skyrim to seek fame and fortune, and got off to a rather bad start when he ran into a bunch of friendly Stormcloaks just after crossing the border.

So, he is more about honour, fame and fortune, whilst Malekith is definately going to be about power, vengeance and domination.

Oh yeah, definitely! I have two characters on the go at the moment; a Breton merchant and an Imperial soldier.

The Breton merchant, Turquoise, grew up in Wayrest but had to leave when her father's trading company collapsed after a raid by pirates from the Iliac Bay, after the Aldmeri Dominion forced the withdrawal of the Northwest Navy. She travelled east into Hammerfell with a trading caravan where she learned basic swordplay and alchemy, furthering her childhood interests. After arriving in Dragonstar, she naively managed to get a place on a caravan going north into Skyrim with a 'lucrative cargo'. So, with the Alternate Start mod, she ended up in hiding with the merchants after the shipment of weapons was uncovered.

The Imperial soldier, Balthazar, was the port inspector in the Imperial City after the Great War. After being shipped to Solitude to take over from the last port inspector, he was accidentally placed into the wrong headquarters detachment at Castle Dour and is now a part of the Logistics Brigade, delivering Imperial correspondence across Skyrim. He's looking to retire and buy up a homestead somewhere to develop. After that, he'll become a hardened old adventurer looking to stamp out the Stormcloaks and the Thalmor wherever they appear.

I've got a few pages for each of them rather than the hasty descriptions above, and I'm drafting a few other characters as well. Might try an Orc next time, I always neglect the non-human races for some reason :v

Nice. Do you know much about the lore of the Elder Scrolls world?

I've only really become interested since buying Skyrim, and have never played Morrowind or Oblivion, so I'm having to paw over the wiki pages to try and peice together my character profiles. Not sure whether they really make sense, but I've done my best based on what I've read.

The Dark Elf's of Morrowind seem to have a similar history to the Dark Elfs of the Warhammer Universe where most of my past roleplying has been based. Except that they don't seem to have the equivalent of the Pheonix King, being ruled by the Tribunal instead. But the whole sundering and civil war thing seems similar.

I know a fair bit, I guess. Played the hell out of Oblivion, and I did the same with Skyrim too. I also run a TES roleplay group (cast aside your stereotyping, we're actually normal people) so they expect me to be able to put together pretty good characters and stories for them c: I thought you'd originally based Malekith on the Witch King of Angmar from the LotR series, heh!

No actually Malekith the Witch King is a Dark Elf character from the Warhammer universe, I only stumbled across Angmar when I was researching his background. It seems to be a pretty common character concept.

In fact, at first I thought Angmar the Witch King was someone elses Skyrim character, so my first reaction was 'Hey! great minds think alike, someone else has already been down the same path.'

So, do you think I got the background for Malekith reasonably solid. I wasn't really sure about the relationship between Dark Elves and the Draedric Princes. The wiki says they worship them but I wasn't sure how active that relationship would be. I just wanted Malekith to have the feeling he had been betrayed by the gods, not just his kin.

In the Warhammer World Malekith enters into a pact with Khaela Mensha Khaine 'The Bloody-Handed God' after he is burned and rejected by the flame of Asuryan during his trial to become the Pheonix King.

His followers believing his scarred and scorched body to be on the verge of death abandon him and flee to Nagarythe or pledge their allegiance to his younger brother who passed the trial and became the Pheonix King instead of him.

But Malekith did not die, instead he entered into a pact with Khaine who bound his wounds and gave him gifts in the form of the Witch King Armours, the spellshield, the cirlet of iron and the great sword 'Destroyer'.

Escaping to Nagarythe, Malekith raises a great army from his remaining followers whom he converts to the worship of Khaine and corrupts into an army of witch-elves and dark magic masters. and so began the long civil war for domination of the elven realms.

I wanted to build a similar back story for Malekith based on Morrowind, but obviously some of the game concepts are different. So I did the best with what I could find.

I'm still working on Malekith's background profile at the minute, but it seems to be coming together quite nicely, assuming that I've not made any major gaff's in EOS Lore.

The Story so far:

Malekith is a prince of House Hlaalu and was a hero of the Oblivion Crisis, managing with the patronage of his preferred deity Mehrunes Dagon the Daedric Prince of Destruction, Change, Revolution and Ambition to come out of the crisis in a very powerful position despite the fall from grace of his House and kinsmen.

With the withdrawal of the Empire from Morrowind, the power vaccum created opportunities for those with the courage to grab them and Malekith was persuaded by Mehrunes Dagon that this was his cue to declare himself the Nevarine and lead his people back to greatness.

Malekith rose to the bait and supported by Mehrunes Dagon made his challenge confronting the Tribunal and raising an army of followers to support his claim to power. There was resistance from the Houses of Redoran and Telvanni, who were also in the ascendency but thanks to Malekith's inspired use of the Camonna Tong it never escalated into open warfare.

Evenutally, the Vivec Temple stepped in with a proposal to end the ongoing dispute before it became a war. Their proposal was simple, 'If Malekith really was the true reinacarnation of Indoril Nerevar, then he would have no trouble treading the path of the incarnate and completing the seven trials.'

If he did so then he would be declared the true reincarnation of the Nevarine. The other Great Houses must then accept the truth of the prophesy and pledge their allegiance to Malekith, the chosen, whose coming was foretold by Azura.

House Indoril objected to this compromise. Indoril Nevrevar was the head of their House during the early First Era, so even if the prophesy were true, surely they argued, the chosen one would be selected from the true blood line of the original Nevarine, not some outcast petty prince from a failing house that had been active supporters of their Imperial oppressors.

These objections were ruthlessly silenced by Malekith, with the help of his Camonna Tong agents and House Indoril quickly fell silent. Their only seat on the Grand Council was taken by a member of House Hlaalu when it's former occupant was assassinated.

With the stage finally set for his glorious rise to power Malekith stepped forward confidently to complete the path of the incarnate. He was assured by Mehrunes Dagon that this was nothing but a formality, a trivial challenge which would secure his final grasp for power.

But Mehrunes Dagon was lying, either that or Azura, Princess of Dusk and Dawn, Mother of the Rose and Queen of the Night Sky, chose this moment to intervene and prevent a minion of a rival prince expliot her prophesy to gain power.

Whatever, the reason Malekith failed to complete the trials and was humilated before everyone at the Vetec Temple. In a fit of rage, he fled the temple, and Morrowind, attacking anyone who stepped in his path.

The Camonna Tong sensibly changed employers and now used their skills on behalf of House Indoril to wreak vengeance on those who had brought about their downfall.

Like many of the failed prophets before him Malekith found himself exiled from Morrowind, and disowned by his own House. Now desperate to distance themselves from this usurper. His army of followers and the expectant beneficiaries of his expected power have melted away, been killed by the Camonna Tong, or arrested by the Ordinators of the Temple as heretics.

What little possessions he managed to grad as he fled Morrowind have been sold or bartered to bribe those whose help he needed to escape. He was making his way to Windhelm, hoping to hide amongst the Dunmer community he has been told live there.

However, he deliberately avoided the direct route, assuming that like him, his enemies would anticipate his plan and would have that road watched. Instead, he had travelled in a wide detour via Helgen and around the headwaters of the White River, planning to approach Windhelm from the North, or perhaps, if he could reach the coast by sea. If he could find some trader willing to take the last of his coin in payment for passage and no questions asked.

But on the road towards Fort Greymoor he had been challenged. It was an elven voice, but he didn't wait to find out for which house or faction they held allegiance. There was not one that he considered likely to be a friend.

He fled off the road avoiding the open plain to the North and instead heading up and over the mountains to the south. He was convinced he could hear pursuit, but scramblng down the far side he found himself trapped by the waters of Lake Ilinalta.

He cursed himself for his stupidity desperately seeking somewhere to hide. He tried to flee west around the top of the lake, but quickly found his path blocked be a human camp, and was forced to double back rather than risk them giving the alarm.

It was dusk now, and he could hear movement in the bushes. He had no real weapon to speak of and if he used his magic he would light his position up like beacon.

He stumble eastwards along the bank until he noticed a strange structure in the water. It looked like a pier, or artificial island, but it looked abandoned, and Malekith crept onto it in the hope of finding a boat or raft that might take him across the lake.

Instead, he found a trap door and dropped down silently into a dark cavern. There was water running and he was quickly soaked as he groped around cautiously looking for somewhere to hide. He found a door behind a waterfall and stumbled through it into what looked like a waterlogged room.

It was then he heard the voices, human this time, he wasn't alone in here.

If anyone spots any glaring anomalies in this backstory please give me a shout and I'll try and rework it again. The timeline might be a bit of a problem.

I''m not sure much of what has happened to Malekith fits in with the current history of Skyrim, but I've deliberately not been specific about when the events took places as elves are very long lived, so in theory Malekith may have been on the run for years if not decades.
