Can I change my main home?
I bought the one at whiterun, and send the wife + 2 kids there. Then I built my own manor, can I send my wife there? I already own the beds.

Also, can I hire guards to defend it? (I just found a mod that let me do it, but no idea in vanilla, guess not)

Thanks in advance!

EDIT:
Thanks for the replys.

In the target house, looks like I lack something to allow me to transfer the family. I had the beds, the cooking spot and some more fortinure, and I couldn't do it.
I let the steward putting stuff for 2 more days, and I get the option to move the family.

there is a mod that allows you to move your family to the house you built. i've no idea what the mod is called, and there are afew mods that add guards and walls.

Just tell your wife you'd like to move. As long as the house you want to move to has a kids' bedroom, it should appear in the list of options.

Is there an easier way to move your items to your new home? other than manually picking it up and moving it?

Just to be clear, you don't need a mod to move your family to house built with Hearthfire. Mods might be needed to move your family to downloaded player homes.

Becoming a thane of the hold will grant you a new housecarl, so you may have two armed characters (steward and housecarl) protecting your family. If you married adventurer, then you might have a bit more power in your home. My mage married Lydia. She actually killed a giant in front of our mansion, before I had even time to fire my spells.

Looks like I didnt meet a triger to move the family the first time I tried after building the beds. 2 ingame days later, I could move them.

Ref I married the riften housecarl, so I'll be lucky too :P
Can I equip them as if they where my follower? I mean, equip them and then make them steward so they have imba-armor. Or I should not worry for them to die while I am not there?

There is a mod on Nexus where you can get guards to protect your Hearthfire Homes. Cannot remember the name but do a search 4 guards to each home plus you can get a Steward and a Housecarl.

You have to carry it all like a big dumb mule :P

or you could use this ... http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25422/?

Well, they actually all revert back to their default gear - except for melee weapons. That's quite annoying. But there are no "action" happening outside the area your character is currently exploring, so you should be near when the battle starts.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Lydia and Gregor were able to keep bandits down, while I was running down the hill. My only job was displaying fancy finnishing moves. Sylgja just came out and gave the old "Oh, what happened?" line, while yard was covered with bodies.
