Riften Evidence Chest?

I stole some very good stuff, and I want it back. However, I can't find the evidence chest. Well for one, I can't even get into the jail, there's a guard right there guarding the entrance. I know the back entrance, but that only leads me to a cell where I get myself locked.

Any help as to where I can get to this evidence chest? My last thought is to probably just become Thane and tell everyone ''I'm the Thane and then maybe they'll back off.

In Riften its in a side room after you pass the guard guarding the entrance of the jail but before you get to the cells.
