Can't give gift to adopted child
For some reason I can't give a gift to my adopted child. It says item to heavy to carry even if its one of those light treats. Anyone know what's up?

Have you given them gifts before? It's possible that their inventory is filled up and anything more would over-encumber them. Try opening the console, clicking on them, and typing "resetinventory".

I know. For example a doll or wodden sword. I tried the items meant for kids.

I have just started playing Skyrim Second Edition, for the first time, this child present bug is still present! I have adopted 2 children, wish it could be more, but I get an error message 'too heavy'. So 4 years later...

You need to use a console command to see their inventory, then take out the junk filling it up.

I know a number of children that were selling stuff (flowers and the like) keep them, despite it weighing them down. I think it was sofie when I did it, but that was over six years ago, so I can't recall the console command.

Is it Sofie? This is a bug that occurs which involves her flower baskets. When you adopt her, she may still have them in her inventory. This is another bug that Bethesda never patched, but it is one addressed by USLEEP.

Hi, I also have a problem with giving gifts to children but I have never had this notification "Item Is Too Heavy Too Carry". I have gifts for children in my inventory and when I try to give them sth they doesn't show, just as if I didn't have any. I managed to give them only some sweets, but that's all.
I tried to reset kid's inventory and it hasn't halped. Do you have any ideas what I can do about it?
To my knowledge unless you use certain mods or a fence you cannot give your children stolen goods. Make sure the gifts are not stolen and try again.

The child's name is Alesan.

From https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Alesan Bugs section:

"If you adopt him, Alesan may sometimes not be able to receive gifts".
This bug is fixed by the Unofficial Patch

If you do not have the Patch - https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/71214 , it is essential that you install it, as it fixes literally thousands of bugs - this being one. Note, however some bugs cannot be fixed retroactively, and in those cases it might be necessary to roll back to a save before the bug was triggered, or in a worst case scenario, start a new game.

I know from one of the girls that they can retain junk in their inventories, and the old solution was to use a console command to access their inventories and remove the junk items. Just don't ask what console command, it's been a while.

For those who adopted Sofie before buying the flowers she had on hand, here's the solution I found:

1. Open console command "~"
2. Click on Sofie
3. showinventory
4. removeitem d955a x

*x is the number of basket she has in her inventory

Having same problem on Switch. Chose to adopt the kid from Dawnstar yet I can't give him anything. Not only that he won't talk to me at all as in I walk into my house and he runs up to me asking for different things like an allowance or to given a gift or play with him

If you're specifically being told it's because the gifts are too heavy, then there's not a lot you can do about that with a non-PC version of the game. If your current house has a "child's chest" then Alesan might eventually offload some of his stuff there. Emptying that chest before you go might help encourage him.

If he refuses to stop talking to you, this may be caused by the presense of certain followers. Usually non-human ones from addons, such as the Dwarven automata from Kagrumez.[en.uesp.net]

Either way you'll probably need to leave the area where your house is for at least an in-game week before you'll see any change. Possibly 30 days.

I waited two months yet still nothing both his and Hroar's chests are still empty and neither one of them greets me when I come home

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything else you can try to rectify the issue while playing the Switch version of the game. I gather it is possible to transfer your save to the PC version (where the command console would allow for an easy fix), but your gaming console will need to be running a customised firmware for that.

After adopting Sofie when trying to give her a gift all the options may be gray and the message "Item Is Too Heavy Too Carry" appears in the top-left corner. This is because she still has all her flower baskets on her from before you adopted her.

This bug is fixed by version 1.0.3 of the Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.

If you have the Merchant perk unlocked, make sure to purchase all of her flower baskets before adopting her, to keep this problem from occurring in the first place (your only option if you do not have access to the console).

To fix this simply open the console and select her with the mouse, then use the command drop 000d955a 500 to force her to drop all the remaining baskets. They stack so only 1 basket will appear, with the total number after the name. If she does not drop any baskets after using this command, make sure the refID of your selected target is xx004031, as it is common to accidentally click the wrong asset when using click targeting.

lol the girl brought 473 flower baskets with a weight of 1, luckily I have mod designer clothes so I can take the flower baskets. here is the mod link https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/50066. if you're scared If you don't get an achievement, you can use the mod https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/245 and how to install it is a bit different and here's how to install it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dik4Ch4NTOY
