Your character made a deal with a crossroads demon.

That could be true... but it might be that after the Oblivion Crisis (Demons nearly destroying the world) the guy might hate Demons for what they have done.

And Sheogorath went to Kyrat and became Pagan Min. Similarities are uncanny.

Yes. In the Shivering Isles expansion, Jyggalag, the final boss, names you the new price of madness. See this:

He refers to you as Sheogorath, and so does everyone else when you come back.

It depends if your character played shimmering isles or not :p

however yes in canon terms, the hero of kvatch does indeed become sheogorath, but he is not really a good or bad god, he is mischievious, like loki, though to be fair he does end up doing the right thing, he just likes to have a lot of fun messing with people while doing so. so your being a good guy is fine.

I seem to remember Sheogorath mentioning something about treating it like a sort of vacation, near the end of the Shivering Isles DLC for Oblivion. Because of that, and because of him having the same voice and look between it and Skyrim, I always assumed that at some point the Hero of Kvatch simply gave the position back.

I mean, about two hundred years did pass between the events of the Oblivion Crisis and the events of Skyrim. Even if taking on the mantle of the Daedric God of Madness offered some longevity, I don't know any mortal person who wouldn't get bored of such a position. =P

When I played a version of my old Oblivion character in Skyrim, I even pretended I was playing the same person. That she decided to give the position back to Sheogorath, who kicked her out of the Isles.. and she woke up headed for the Helgen headsman as a nasty little parting gift. =D

You spoiled the ending!

That's how I always understood it. The whole point of the Skyrim Sheogorath quest is to get him to stop sunning his ass in the Oblivion Riviera and get back to creating mischief in Mundus.

Proof? Proof you say?

How about a vid of the ending of shivering isles. Though it looks like he recorded this on a pc way too slow to play it properly.

From what I can tell, Sheogorath is Sheogorath.

1. In SI, when he tells you that you'll become him. The player asks Sheogorath how he/she can become a Daedric god when they arent a Daedra. Sheo answers that you won't, just that you'll be a replacement (temp or otherwise) to watch over the isles (and a "me, to fight the him, which will be me"). The player doesn't literally become Sheogorath.

2. Daedra can't die, they simply get sent back to Oblivion. So why would Daedric gods die?

3. Jyggalag (or however you spell his name) was turned into Sheogorath by the other Daedric gods. Since Daedra can't die, who's to say they didn't just do it again once Jygawhatever appeared back in Oblivion? It would actually fit rather well with the whole madness thing.

I know right! It all fits with the maddnes!

Within the lore there's a concept of "mantling" where a mortal can become so much like the daedra that the two essentially become one, fusion so to say. That means Sheogorath did not "die" but he did get replaced or partially dissolved. Jyggalag very clearly says you are the new prince of madness, not "you can watch over the isle now" and when saying that you will grow into the office, he obviously means mantling.

Only the canon matters. You could have played a Female Pansexual Gloob from the planet of Zaron that happened to successfully murder everyone and joined forces with Mehrunes Dagon and ended up destroying all of Nirn, but the games after the one you are playing will only care about what Bethesda decrees as canon. This isn't Dragon Age or Mass Effect. There is no support, and no point in having it implemented, for your choices over the course of the series.
