Vilkas keeps trying to kill me before I do anything in Take Up Arms quest

It's a new save and a new game and my first time interacting with the companions. I go outside to be tested by Vilkas, but as soon as his dialogue "don't worry, I take can it" ends, he and everyone in the town immediately turn hostile and try to kill me. I don't even get a chance to hit him lol. Anything I can do?

Try punching a guard and then going to jail. Once you're out, it should clear any weird scripts running.

If that don't work, then you may need the unofficial patches if you aren't already running them.

You also need to get a tiny mod called Brawl Bug's Patch. It keeps brawls from going nuclear.

Shelt is correct. This problem is usually related to same matter why your bralwing opponents might take it more serious than they should.

One (or more) effects around you is using a "cloak" effect. Your opponet gets affected by it's polling and considers that you are making a magical attack against them. Brawl Bugs Patch (or SkyRe) will fix this.

Hi, thanks for the responses. Unfortunately neither serving jail time or the mod helped my problem and Vilkas still wants to whoop my ass. He doesn't say anything about magic, if that helps. He just acts like any other hostile NPC "never should have come here" etc. The rest of the companions attack me too.

also: having a much more gamebreaking issue here if you feel up to helping me there.. http://steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/620700960560371378/ but i'm honestly considering a fresh delete of absolutely everything - game files, saves and mods - and just starting from scratch. i'm sick of this bull lol

yes I have all of them and they are all BOSS'd into the correct order

Weird. Does it do the same strange things with other characters, or just that one? Sounds like you got a corrupt save or some kind of mod conflict maybe. There's a script somewhere telling him to attack you.

It's only happening with Vilkas and the companions. It's a fresh save and my first time interacting with any of them. I'm higher level now but I went to see them when I was barely level 2 or 3 and it was an issue right away, so I don't feel like it's a corrupt save issue. It's possibly a mod conflict but I'm very unsure of how to figure out which ones...

Have you tried any console commands yet?

Get close to him

Open console with the ~ key

Click on him and then type setav aggression 0.

Close console with the ~ key

sheathe your weapon.

Thank you so much! it seems LOOT fixed my issue. It told me that the Brawl Bugs Patch was technically obsolete since it was apparently included in another update, so I disabled that too, I don't know if that contributed to anything. Vilkas let me punch him and then sent me on my way hehe.

Modding community needs to get with the NMM people and integrate LOOT and TesVedit into one vehicle. It would be pretty cool to just open NMM and have a LOOT button to sort plugins and another to clean them.

I do not recommend cleaning any mods, unless the author especially recommends doing so, or you just someone's judgement enough to follow his/her advices.

But, yeah. 2in1 migth be fun.

yeah LOOT told me i need to clean a bunch of my files and i looked up the cleaning page and i didn't understand it at all..looked scary..

For anyone else having this problem and not willing to install mods, hit Vilkas three times and skip through the dialogue until you have his sword. Leave and return to Whiterun and they will not be agro and you can continue.
