I have quite a few mods as well as all the official DLC.
The most common reason I heard for this issue is that some mods add an invisible "cloak" over your character such as hypothetically you have a mod which makes bears like you. To do that, the mod has to add some spell on you. The problem is that the game detects this and it tells the AI that you are "cheating" by using magic which is one of the normal ways to forfeit brawls.
If you want a fix there's a mod for that on the Nexus, aptly named Brawl Bug Fix or something like that. On a side note, do you have the Unofficial Skyrim Patches (USKP)?
I''m gooing to see if the Brawl Bug Fix works. And yep, I've got the Unofficial Skyrim Patches.
I made that mistake for the thiefs guild quests, and she started killing everyone in the inn after she also attacked the inkeeper we where supposed to mussle out of protection money lol The gaurds dint care for some reason though, bit odd.
What I did to avoid that was to make sure I don't run too far away or else she WILL pull out the sword if you give her enough time and space to do it.
Safe to say that I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ executed her on accident and imbeded a sword through her head
