Can't become Thane or purchase a house in Markarth, any help?
I'm using almost no mods in this playthrough. I've done close to all the quests in Markarth (that I could find) including a quest given by the Jarl to defeat a camp of Forsworn. There are no dialogue options from the Jarl about buying a house or becoming Thane, there are no diologue options period with the steward, except for one about a bounty on a Dragon, which I've completed. So is there something I'm missing? I've never encountered this problem before.

I truly wish I could help, but I've never been thane of the reach. No matter what I did it wouldn't let me. No matter what file. With mods or without. Not even the console version.

Do you recall if you completed a lot of the quests before even talking to the Jarl? Maybe there's a bug that prevents the dialogue from appearing if you've already completed the quests in the city..

I remember being a Thane of Markarth and getting a pretty sweet house inside the city. I don't remember the conditions needed for it, though. Have you done the quest about the Forsworn and Silver-Bloods? And I don't know if it IS......... But maybe it worked for me and not you because I have all the DLC?

You don't need DLC for it. Sounds like a bug. Check the www.uesp.net and see if it's listed.

I've done that quest yes, and I have all the DLCs. I've owned this house before, this is my first time encountering this bug.

Just checked and there doesn't seem to be any bugs listed that involve Markarth

Have you started the "Forsworn Conspiracy"? You know, when the dude hands you a letter after the forsworn attacks that lady? There's a bug that if you're starting or have that quest active, no Markarth house for you, under the current Jarl. Ha, usually when I want a house there, I don't even read the note. Now... a fix, if you join the Stormcloaks and win Markarth for them, Markarth will change Jarls and you can usually get the house then.

If you've not done that quest, or don't have it active, to get the Markarth home you need...

1. To have enough money in your inventory to purchase the home and all of its upgrades
2. Be level 20
3. Did one forworn camp clearning for the Jarl
4. Then he will ask you to retrieve his shield
5. Help 5 people in the reach.

There should be 2 jobs for the Jarl 1st kill the forsworn leader second one retrieve a shield (If I'm correct) ... then the jarl gives you the option to buy a house and no helping 5 people is for becoming a thane however buying the house just require the 2 jobs for the Jarl.

I completed the Forsworn Conspiracy before ever talking to the Jarl I believe. So I'm out of luck? I'm certainly not joining the Stormcloaks on my current character xD. I've done the job for him to clear the Forsworn camp, but he has not given me any task for a shield.
(Just noticed the level 20 thing, I'm only level 19, so hopefully that's the issue.)

Remember that doing quests for NPCs near the city, but outside of it can help.
