Btw. If you want to actually carry something with that horse, or would like followers to ride as well, try this mod in your game. You can set your horses as cowards (never fighting) or foolhardy (fighting, like in vanilla game) or even essential.

But as far as losing it dont worry, every time you fast travel he should be right beside you (unless you use another horse between when you got off him and then fast travelled) so losing horses is generally pretty hard. :)

No, not all mods require the DLCs. I don't believe Convenient Horses requires any DLCs.
