Best Beginner's House?
Hi folks!

I'm looking to buy my first house (around 5000-10000po). I'm choosing between Whiterun, Riften and Markath.

Which one do you think is the best to start?

Thanks for help ;)

Whiterun house is superior in the sense of sensible storage space. It has everything in right places. Storage locations in other homes do not really make a lot of sense. You have easy access to all crafting tools, except for enchanting table. Nearest table is the Dragonsreach, but - unlike alchemy - you rarely spend that much time in front of it any way.

Riften home is cosy, but a bit claustrophobic. Crafting gear and stores are near, but smelter is far. It would be much better if your housecarl would not be constantly in front of you.

Markarth home has everything, but I personally consider it boring and cold. However, storage space is in somewhat reasonable distance from crafting tables, city has a smelter and stores are close enough.

Whiterun is the most affordable and compact, and has the perk of a satchel right on the alchemy bench, something I decided to incorporate into my own player home mod. Riften comes with a garden and a nice set of displays for its price, and Markarth has a single-floor layout and decent number of bookshelves, but is among the pricier homes, only cheaper than the solitude house if I remember correctly.
After playing for a long time on xbox, I got this for pc a while ago and recently learned that if you want something perfect for yourself, a week of modding can get you there. That can be a bit cheaty though, so I wouldn't do it on a first playthrough.

Whiterun also has the smithing store next door, as well as a goods store, alchemy, and inn nearby. That's why I ended up liking Whiterun home area.

Additionally, I later added another mod for a player house in Whiterun, which is also nearby to the game-provided house. So now I feel like I have two homes very close to each other. For storage, it doesn't really matter, as one barrel or chest can hold a lot of items, but for the feeling of have two homes nearby like that, it's fun.

I would say breezehome and If you have all dlc's run a mod that alters breezehome there are several that adds a smelter etc to breezehome.

Any tips/mods to make this place better?

I find the house in Markarth is really hard to find, I was running around looking for it about 5 minutes, but it's bigger than the others and your housecarl isn't always sitting in your bedroom.

Breezehome. Four places to sell armour/weapons one of which is open 24/7. Two Blacksmiths, Alchemist, General merchants, Inn, Temple, two shrines, a Wizard sells spell tomes etc. Trainers of Smithing, Heavy armour,Block, Two-handed, One-handed, Archery, Alchemy and Restoration,

Best all-rounder hold in Skyrim.

Edit: Riften house would be my second choice. Like my house compact without all those nooks and twisty stairs.

If you're into mod houses Beginners Shack is nice for a mod and its' simple. If you want somethimg more exotic Field Lab Two is awesome in that that its portable. Yes, it floats in the air...

I gotta disagree, I like the Riften house the best of any basic vanilla house. Only drawback is the lack of smelter in the city, but there's a simple mod to correct that. It's also the only house that has a back door out of the city.

Well I had that mod for breezehome I've got now Breezehome fully upgradable super mod however in comparison a mod whereby the upgrades are costly ... garden, library, forge, smelter, etc, etc. The mod TNF comes with all included.

That "TNF" mod is really awesome!! More furnitures, better placing of Alchemist lab and level design way better than the original one. Definitely a must-have for a beginner like me ^^

I like Honeyside except its mannequin glitch, It has enough space for me to spawn grindstone, workbench, and anvil in its basement with console, no mods required hehe :)
