Summons are a much better bet for sneaky-type players.
I do remember seeing a mod that gives companions better sneaking mechanics,
having a follower wait and then moving on, come back for your follower once you have gone so far. if you run into trouble and need help you can lure the enemy back to your followers position where they will then get involved.

check the page and follower links to see what every follower is like
There is a mod that will make followers go into stealth mode with you (and another that will have sneaking NPC's turn off the torches they carry).
They're certainly supposed to, and for most players, they do.
find your followers refid to add it.
For example, if using Lydia:
prid a2c94
addspell 0009379c
Humm I would like to know more about this. Could you please tell me how to program the other Companions to move with a surefoot ?!
Thank you
You can find the list of vanilla followers here:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Followers
Click on the name of the follower you want to give surefoot. Find their refid and then type what I posted before, using the followers refid code number in place of where it says refid below.
prid refid
addspell 0009379c
Amazing Follower Tweaks[www.nexusmods.com] has an option that makes followers not only sneak, but turn invisible and ignore combat. I know that's not exactly what you're looking for, but it is quite useful if you want to scout an area and not have to go a long way back to pick up a waiting follower.
AFT also handles that. There is a setting to make followers not trip traps. I prefer to avoid console commands because they can have ripple effects that cause problems later.
farkas, vilkos, are the most stupid followers and tend to get their own butts killed by not recognizing when they are being hit. so ya I agree and half the time I have to hit them myself for them to wakeup. AFT is the way to go
nods in approval, and agreement :-)
