"I have a house, but no room for you."
Every time i want to adopt a child i get the same answer, over and over again.
I have built Winstand Manor from the ground up.

It has an arcane tower, storage room and library. Everything is fully upgraded except the head mounts on certain places and the shrine in the basement.

There are two single beds upstairs and one master bed. I have built every single container there is to build upstairs. There are no more options. And yet i can't adopt anyone. Why?

I know you don't have to build a bedroom wing on Hearthfire houses, because that would be plain stupid since you already have single beds.

I don't have a housecarl, and i am not married. So what am i missing?

EDIT: Removing the workbenches from my house and waiting a bit fixed my problem.

You should be fine. The two children's beds in the house are sufficient, and you do not need to be married. You don't mention a steward, but perhaps you need one? Doubtful, but it's something to look into.

To experiment, SAVE THE GAME, then upgrade another house to have a child's bedroom. Then try adopting again. The house in Whiterun is a good choice. If you can adopt, then try moving your child to your Hearthfire home.

Arem't you suppose to make a Bedroom wing?
Brandybuck Jan 9, 2015 @ 12:20pm
The bedroom wing is purely optional. If you make one then your family just stops sleeping upstairs.

I always start with Breezehome(?) in Whiterun. Put the childs bed there then adopt Lucia.
I will look into it. I haven't bought any houses prior to building this one, and it was a mess. There are so many bugs in this game that really breaks my enjoyment. Even with the unofficial patch. I don't remember Oblivion having this many. Anyway, i will try to buy Breezehome and upgrade it then adopt some children. I will report back later, thanks for the help.
I have purchased a house in whiterun and everything seems to work for that house. But i simply can't move my family to Windstand Manor. My wife is there, but the kids are in breezehome. There is no option to move them there. And when i check the general stats it says "House Owned: 1"

Does Windstand Manor even counts as a house? Maybe it didn't register? Any way to fix this? I spent a lot of time upgrading that damn thing and i don't have any previous saves because they tend to be too large for steam cloud.

And do i need to remove the workbenches? Also, the two bed upstairs are owned for some reason. I have a wife, a steward and a bard in my house. Do they use those beds? Is this why i can't adopt any children? It makes little sense to me.

The beds upstairs are owned... by your children. What a strange bug you have. Does the wiki say anything about this?

Think Hearthfire buildable houses are bugged. I had a house my kids could live in, but not my wife, then I had a house no one could move into.

Try this. Move with your wife to Breezehome. Then ask her to move again, the children always follow the wife.
I'm already using the unofficial patches for Skyrim + all DLC. I fixed it by removing all the workbenches and traveling far away from Windstand.

It seems that you can't have workbenches active for whatever reason when adopting. Everything else worked fine with them.

Thanks for the help.

Kids rooms need a chest each and in the build it yourself home you should get the option in the kids room from the crafting bench / table to make 'childs chest" ??

Yup, you need two chests as well, not just the two beds. Not called child's chest as I recall. But if havng built all containers it still doesn't work, then it's probably a bug. I definitely never needed to remove the workbenches to get them to move.

I had the same problem, but in my case the game showed the beds were owned when I had a bard and steward with no children. I was finally able to move my kids into Lakeview manor after constructing the Bedroom Wing. Go figure?

It was my understanding that the bedroom wing is a requirement, given that it contains the children's beds, chests, etc.
