I know that Oblivion's melee combat is the same as in the later released Fallout 3 (because Gamebryo engine doesn't really cut this feature), but it was 2006 and somehow I can't stand 3 attack animations over and over again with every weapon type in an Action RPG released in 2011. It just bores me terribly after about of 40mins of slashing through enemies.
Story and setting also seems rather dull and boring when compared to 2 previous installements.
Yes, Skyrim looks beautiful has hundreds of quests and dragons, but its really just window dressing. Once you engage most NPCs you find they only have 2/3 lines of dialog.
Get some mods. No matter how good a game is, after 2/3 runs you'll want some variety.
Mods can literally change the way you play Skyrim to the point its almost an entirely new game
I've been downloading some mods but game still didn't bought me. World is big I must admit, but it's boring, dull and EMPTY.
The main thing that puts me off is the terrible combat. No matter which weapon you use, your character just swings it left, right and overhead when you use a powerful attack.
So little animations are really getting boring in a sandbox RPG.
Does anyone have names of any tested mods which add more attack animations?
How can you actually release an Action-RPG game with 3 SAME attack animations per every weapon in the game? That's just being terribly lazy if you ask me :/.
Many in-world options, such as multiple ownable houses in the same city, an actual court trial, carriages for your horse, multiple levels of attire, etc. have been removed as well, perhaps to accomadate to the scaled-down world.
Now, I've come to lighten up on 'modded' skyrim, but vanilla wise, yeah, you could debate whether or not it's even a 'Role-Playing' game.
By far Fallout New Vegas is a much better experience for me. I bought it back when it came out on PS3 in 2010. I've bought it again on Steam 2.5yrs ago and enjoyed it very much again. Fallout 3 didn't bought as it was made by Bethesda, was terribly broken and being a huge Fallout fan I didn't feel like actually playing Fallout.
Obsidian fixed this by making New Vegas actually feel like a Fallout game as it was made mostly by the team which was working on either Fallout or Fallout 2.
Skyrim seriously feels to me like horribly dumbed-down Elder Scrolls experience.
The only people making (from what I hear) a true rpg experience anymore are CD Red and The Witcher series, but I dont like games where the main char is set, the 1st one was asweome though.
But adding to your gripes, you cant have an open world , with epic, exciting things happening all the time, 100 yards from each other. Sometimes the beauty of skyrim is walking in the serene landscape. But again, there are mods than can spice up the world map as well.'
Mods. You need them.
Even without mods and unofficial patches, I liked the game, so there certainly is a personal feeling for all these games. For example, even when Oblivion was the big RPG game to try, I did...and also could not get passed the first 1 hr. However, I just left the game, not really wondering why I couldn't like it.
If I didn't like it, I just moved on. Same for Diablo.. I can't get into it, so never did try Diablo 2 or 3. There were plenty of other game options without worrying about why I didn't like some game that so many other people liked.
Well I'm Polish and I've read all of Witcher books back when they were released in Poland by Sapkowski.
Character in the game is "set" as the plot of it is based on the books main character Geralt, and without him as the playable character the game's just wouldn't feel right.
Also honorable mention Shrapnel is Obsidian Entertainment studio which consists of the previous Interplay/Black Isle employees, which made such great RPG's like Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Planscape: Torment.
They have an incoming classic RPG game, due to release this year, namely Pillars of Eternity (mad on Unity engine).
There is also InXile Entertainment which was founded by Interplay founder Brian Fargo, which is set to release Torment: Tides of Numenara this year. Another classic, isometric view RPG.
I got way further than escaping from the "Dragon" part and it's still unenjoyable. I've played it on PS3 before as well.
