how to stop Hold Guards from attacking on sight?
Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for any advice!
My question is at the bottom, but ive written the scenario that leads to the question.

I'm got all the DLC downloaded. Im playing Vanilla version and with no mods.

Anyway, the scenario is this.
I am 8 hours in to my first PC save. I'm level 8 in game, and just baught my first plot of land (in falkreath), and stopped off at a Dungeon. After clearing the dungeon both my follower and I are carrying as much loot as we can hold. So i fast travel to Whiterun (the best place to sell, due to so many merchents) and approach Adrianne to offload my loot.
When all of a sudden, a 'Vampire Master' appears and starts attacking the War Maiden. My first instinct was to help protect the poor lady, so i unstring my bow and start firing arrow after arrow at the evil one.
By now, the Whiterun Guards have started to get stuck into the blood sucker. All of a sudden one of my arrows lands in the neck of a Guard. The guards all turn on me just as Adrianne dies and I land a final, fatal arrow into the Vampire.
Now, as I am overladen with loot, and not wanting a heavy fine. I sheath my bow, expecting the fight to end there, and to recieve a 50-500 fine for assaulting one of Whiteruns guards. But no, they dont grant me any quarter. I then flee the city and once safely away, i fast travel to Falkreath to sell off my loot.
I turn to my companion, Faendal to take all the loot from his inventry. But instead he proceeds to leave my services and start attacking me as soon as i attempt to talk with him..
So after killing my follower, i proceed to return to Whiterun and settle things with the Law there. But again, I am attacked on sight..

So my question is this: how do i stop whiterun guards from attacking me on sight?

By the way, I've played around 250 hours on the Xbox 360 version but not any DLC before.

Thanks for all who read that wall of text, and I hope ive explained my situation correctly!

if sheathing and unsheathing a weapon doesn,t help stay away for a few days and meet a lone guard on the road hopefully by this time his aggresion has lessened enough to talk to you and give you a choice.

or revert to a save before the vampire attack

This is one of those annoying things about Skyrim, do you waigh in and help the certain-to-die NPC and risk a friendly fire incident or stand back and watch the world go up in flames?

Faendal is part of the Whiterun crime faction so he becomes hostile like the good folk of Whiterun.

You'll have to yield i.e. sheathe a weapon to a guard and pay a bounty or go to jail, if the guards are really p'd off then you'll have to quit Whiterun for a a few days until they've cooled off, then return and get yourself arrested.

There is a console command to payoff Whiterun crime bounty its

Smile n Fire; yeah sheathing my bow made no diffence. So i will try and stay away for a few in game days and see if that helps. I dont mind paying the fine, its more i want access to the city.

Zefram Cochrane; I know! Especially when it is a shopkeeper who is under attack. I guessed that Faendal was turning on me for due to his loyalty to Whiterun, but his loyalty lead to his death.
If keeping away from Whiterun doesnt work, i may try out the console command.

Thank you both for the quick replies!

I've noticed (on the PS3) that if I manage to REALLY piss off the guards, they won't stop attacking. However, when I fought my way to Dragonsreach, they immediately started the criminal dialogue. I have noticed that usually when the guards attack me and won't stop is when I sneak attack one of them; I don''t get a bounty, but for some reason the rest of the guards will try to kill me. (Attacking any guards after that will give me a normal bounty for assault or murder.)

a) Download 'Run for your lives' and 'When vampires attack'
b) Enter any town at night after level 8, expect this
c) DONT engage in vampire fights, (see A), if you must
1) prepare to reload
2) do NOT leave the cell, as this will automatically seal your fate

shrapnel, i dont quite understand your post.
- is A) mods?
- why not engage in vampire fights?
- what do you mean by 'dont leave the cell'
Yes A is mods., don't know why to avoid the vampire fights. Leaving a cell overwrites previous autosave.

Run for your lives makes quest giving/everyone who's not a guard seek shelter during dragon attacks
When Vampires attack does the same but for vampire city raids

Because of the exact scenario you're describing. Every, single, time I engage them I end up reloading because its a pure melee fight, people are moving here, mvoing there, doing power attacks...plus I play on legendary where these fights can take upwards of 15 minutes before we take *ONE* of them down, nevermind him constantly re-raising the dead. So yea, when I fight for 14 minutes and on my 2nd to last killing blow the entire town goes red on me? F that. I'll download a mod and wish you all good luck, Im fast travelling outta here, got other things to do than refight a vampire 5 times :)

It's not unique to Skyrim. Both Morrowind and Oblivion had this problem. Is it fair? No. Is it immersive? Hell yes! You just shot a cop and now all the other cops are after you and the citizenry is cheering them on. Do the cops want to stop and reason with you, or kill first and interrogate later? The answer is obvious.

Shooting guns and firing bows into the middle of a group of cops trying to take down a bad guy is not the smartest thing to do.

unless you kill them all
