5000 Hours I see you've touched some beacons in your life time.

I tested this out, when I kept dying the first time she picked me up. I made a quicksave just before the event and kept testing it out. Every time I looked down the fall killed my character. Every time I kept looking Meridia's light, my character walked away alive.
Of course this advice goes to category "confirmation needed", because I have only tested this with my own character and haven't done that quest for a loooooong time.
It is more likely that moving my mouse to look up re-positioned my character and the direction I was looking did not actually matter.

Edit: Yes I did see the patch fixed the problem.
Save. Use ~ to open console and type
player.inv
then find Meridia's beacon in the list of items you have on you. (Easier if you dump everything you can in a container first) Get the ID number associated with Meridia's Beacon, then type
player.drop [ID number without brackets]
and Meridia's Beacon should drop to the floor. You can then drag it around, shove it in a corner, sit it in a bowl, or whatever, like you would move any other object. If you accidentally pick it up, just do it again.
The wikia page shows 4e4e6 as the ID number. You will want to double check that in your player.inv list, but if it's accurate, your command line should be
player.drop 4e4e6
