Keyboard wont work, thinks I'm using a gamepad (SOLVED)
Ever since I reinstalled Skyrim yesterday, I've been unable to play the game, due to the fact that my game thinks I'm using a gamepad. I've previously used a gamepad some times when I've played the game, but when I wanted to use my keyboard, all I had to do was unplug it. That gamepad is no longer with me (RIP), but my game clearly has problems with letting it go. The last time I used a gamepad was over 6 months ago, and it has been working fine several times after my loss (RIP) using only a keyboard and a mouse.

When I'm on the main menu, the mouse is not working, and only the up, down and enter key works. When I enter the game, either in a new save or an older save, I can't move. I've tried to connect a gamepad to my computer to see if that would work, but I can't do anything, even then. I've tried to reinstall the game and verify cache several times, I've checked Devices and printers to see if anything is connected, but there is no gamepad there.

This makes me unable to play my game, and it makes me sad. Please help if you have a solution.

Delete "skyrimprefs.ini" and "skyrim.ini" in your "Skyrim" directory. Exit all programs, ensure no gamepad plugged in, cold-boot and when you launch the new configuration will be created. Alternatively, you may edit the .ini but try delete and cold boot, first.

Where do I locate the Skyrim directory? Tried looking through my documents, and my games, but I can't find any of those files.

SKYRIM KEYBOARD AND MOUSE ISSUE [SOLVED FOR ALL]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So if you've tried to get rid of the thing when your game thinks that your playing on a xbox and you can't use your keyboard or mouse, I will show you how to fix it for everyone. So try all the steps until you find the one that works for you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Make sure to unplug a xbox controller if you have one inplugged in your pc.

2. Launch game> main menu> in main menu open console> type: coc riverwood> press escape and go to settings, uncheck the box that says gamepad/controller.

3. Launch steam and right click on skyrim and press on Properties>Local Files>Browse Local Files and when your in your skyrim directory open the map "Skyrim" and then right click on "SkyrimPrefs.ini". Scroll down to "MAIN" and under main you will find bGamepadEnable=1 and change 1 to 0.

4. Press on the windows button>control panel>view devices and printers and if you find a xbox controller or just another controller right click on it and press on delete. (YOU CAN INSTALL THE DEVICE YOU'RE DELETING! JUST PLUG THE DEVICE IN AND IT WILL BE ON YOUR COMPUTER AGAIN IF YOU'RE WORRIED!) Now try to launch the game again.

5. Go to your antivirus program and disable the "Firewall".

6. If you're on this step and you can't fix the probelm you NEED to reinstall the game.

Hey, where is the main menu to uncheck the game pad and I changed it from 1 to 0 but it still thinks I’m using a controller HeLP

Found a solution that worked for me. Open steam > properties >local files > browse local files > Skyrim > SkyrimPrefs.ini > right click and open with notepad (or something that lets you edit with text) > CTRL + F > "game" it should say bGamepadEnable=1 or something like that change that value to 0 "bGamepadEnable=0" without quotes and save the document.

If running Mod Organizer Open steam > properties >local files > browse local files > ModOrganizer > Profiles> default > skyrim prefs.ini and do the same thing above. Hope it helped!

Disabling the bGamepadEnable setting didn't work for me. Unplugging my gamepad (not in use - no batteries) wireless receiver from the USB port made it work again. Skyrim was detecting the receiver even though there wasn't a gamepad connected to it.

I came to say that I did same as ihops_said (setting bGamepadEnable to 0) and it worked for me. The deleting the files thing didn't by the way...

Why the hell would you disable your firewall???
If you need to disable your firewall just to get a game to realise your keyboard isn't a gamepad, then something is seriously wrong.

I have no problem with the rest, but I have yet to disable my firewall to fix any problem, and I won't be starting any time soon.
