1. Go to your Skyrim Directory <\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim>
2. Open your skyrimeditor.ini file
3. Search for sResourceArchiveList2
4. At the end of that line put , DawnGuard.bsa, HearthFires.bsa, Dragonborn.bsa
5. Make sure it looks like this : SResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Update.bsa, Dawnguard.bsa, HearthFires.bsa, Dragonborn.bsa
<PS> You need to add bAllowMultipleMasterFiles=1 to the General Section..to allow more then one masterfile
<PSS>You need to add bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=1 to the General Section..to load up more then one masterfile

7. Start up your Creation Kit and select Dawnguard.esm or HearthFires.esm or Dragonborn.esm only and load
8.then patiently wait for it to load..and it should all work now

It is also recommended by Darkfox 127 that when you have opened the Creation kit and before you do anything else you make a save. He has found this prevents his CK from crashing.
In fact, I did do this, and it works. Much appreciated, but the original question...is there a way to kill the crashes, or at least tone them down?
> In fact, I did do this, and it works.
Depends on WHY it's crashing. If you are getting crashes related to texture/mesh problems (e.g., the CK hates proper 6-panel cubemaps and crashes on them all the time when trying to render actor heads), this "do a save first" trick won't do anything about it at all.
In....5 years, I've learned the best practices, etc and have since "resolved" the issue.
