Gems and jewels - KEEP or SELL?
Amethysts, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, etc. What should I with them? Are they important ingredients for some quest or are they just there to be sold and earn money for?

you can sell them, as you will find many many more-if you ever need them for crafting jewelery or gems to fill so you can recharge enchanted weapons

at start of game sell them for gold, save them later on for crafting and recharging

There is a particular quest that requires two flawless sapphires (EDIT: three, apparently). They're tedious to get when you are actively looking for them, so I would save any flawless sapphires you happen to find until you complete that quest.

The quest is given by the Argonian jewelry vendor in the marketplace at Riften

Besides that, just sell them unless you want them to make some particular piece of jewelry for enchanting. It's entirely cosmetic, though; an enchantment on a simple silver necklace is just as powerful as an enchantment on a super-expensive gold diamond amulet.

Done that, and it actually required 3 Flawless Sapphires. I'm not into crafting jewelry. Thank you for the advice.

Oh thanks, it's been awhile since I did that quest. I'll try to remember that so I don't give people bad advice.

Yeah, if you aren't crafting the stuff, just sell it. I don't think there are any other quests that call for specific gemstones.

A good rule of thumb is: if it's not Flawless, then sell it. Except for sapphires, emeralds, and diamonds. Even if they're not Flawless they are good crafting gems.

Save them for when you have gold and silver ingots and make jewelry. That way you can increase your smithing skill. AFter that you can sell the jewelry for more than the gems alone.

I was also saving them up for the day when I might do a lot of crafting with them. Then I reached a point where money was easier to come by, and I could buy out the entire inventories of vendors.

So I think it's good if you will craft a lot before you get a lot of money. Otherwise, when you reach that money point, you will probably just buy craft items to help get faster skill-ups.

As another example, because money was easier to get now, I trained alchemy up to 80 or 90..I can't remember what the max was for the best trainer. But it means that I didn't need all those materials I had been saving, to go from 15 to 90, for example.

If you got the Dragonborn DLC you can use them in a hidden cave to make THROWABLE SPIDERS!

I keep all jewels.
I stack iron/silver/gold.
I Transmute everything next to my bed for easy Mana.
Craft tons of jewelry. Blacksmith XP.
Enchant the jewelry. Enchanting XP.
Sell everything. Speech XP.

Not into crafting jewellery, or not into crafting?

The more valuable the item you create, the more skill XP you get for it. Jewels happen to be worth a lot more than, say for example, daggers - and jewels with gems in them are worth much more again.

Hm. This might change the way I process loot.

I was usually just selling items whenever I get back into town, but now I also started enchanting them before selling, mainly due to a surplus of soul gems, now that I regularly use weapons that can do soul capture instead of having to cast it, since I usually have my hands full with weapons or shield so it was a little annoying to switch for every target.

So that worked out well, but now I am also adding a few hundred more gold by tempering the items at the blacksmith before selling.

I think overall, by playing that way and working up enchanting and smithing slowly, I haven't felt the need to powerlevel those two skills with all the tips and tricks offered on tutorial videos and other descriptions. In other words, just through playing the game, looting and working on items before selling them, then those other skills will go up with time, instead of in 5 minutes or 1 hr, etc as the videos suggest.

It's a good way to grind smithing since the skill gain is based on the cash value of the item created. Learn the transmute spell to turn iron into silver and gold.

I don't use the spell (never liked it), but I do use JewelCraft, as integrated part of Complete Crafting Overhaul - Remade. Feature can be activated from MCM.

I recommend using CCOR, because it fixes a lot of things from the game. However, it also does changes to certain smelting recipes that may feel overwhelming at first (although I personally agreed with them at once), so I will link the original mod as well. Note that CCOR does not require the original mod.
