What the heck happened in Riften?

So I walked out of the Rat way one Skyrim night and headed up to the market place in Riften, only to find 6 dead guards lined up around the well in the middle. There were no other guards around, nor people. I assumed it was just a glitch, or that they were killed by a dragon. (my game likes to glitch dragons into holds a lot in my game) So I went on with my playing.

The next Skyrim day I came back to Riften to find every npc freaking out, with new dialogue and such. A guard came up to me and asked if I knew anything. I replied no and she said to notify the commander if I found out anything. No quest started or anything so I talked to her again and chose the uncooperative option to see if that got me anywhere. It only landed me in jail.

I also heard some creepy unknown noises (like Gollum breathing) in the Cistern.. I think I'm going crazy.

But can anyone shed light on the 6 dead guards, it doesn't seem to be discussed anywhere and I am so confused.

There was obviously a fight in your abscence. Why there weren't dead people with the guards I couldn't begin to speculate.

That sounds like the aftermath of a vamp attack to me. I see it often in Whiterun(poor Belethor, he seems to get caught up in it every time I play a new game).

Yep. Vampires. You also get a Thief run through there being chased by guards but they don't fight back. Had to of been a Master Vampire and probably some Death Hounds.

The weird NPC behaviour is normal when there are "friendly" bodies lying around a city. The guard asking you about the body he found isn't quest related, but is just there for "flavour".

Plus the new dialogue is probably from a mod.

Sometimes a fight will break out between the townsfolk and the guards, the guards will win. Usually.

This sounds like something different, do you have Dawnguard? If so it'll be a vampire attack (townsfolk are indoors evenings/nightime)

Dragons getting into holds is rare, but it happens. Your Gollum breathing tells me you have some mods doing this. If I were you I would be looking at what mods you added that do this. Read the mod descriptions, understand what they do, look at their comments.

couldent find any dead bodys though, i did hear fighting while in another part of riften as well o-0

ok (sorry for spamming chat) i did some research and it has nothing to do with mods it just happens whenever you are close to a dead body or something, like a guard could kill them and come up to you and say "You there, what do you know about this" even though he just killed them.
