Ancient Knowledge?
From the elder scrolls viki
Knowledge gained from the Lexicon confers a 25% bonus when wearing Dwarven armor and Smithing increases 15% faster.

My question is wether or not it allows you to gain smithing faster or create better items and do i need to wear dwarven armor while smithing to apply the effect?

From the same wiki
Ancient Knowledge gives 25% armor bonus to all armor types except Dwarven armor. This can happen even after the official patch 1.9.31.0.8 that supposedly has the fix for the bug.

The Unofficial Skyrim Patch seems to fix this.

PC Even though the effect's description says it only improves how fast Smithing can level up, it may improve how far armor and weapons can be upgraded instead.

It makes your smithing increase faster... so each crafted/improved item will give you more Smithing Experience, so that you gain levels faster.

And no, you don't need to wear Dwarven Armor to get the effect.

If you wear Dwarven Armor with 400 armor rating, then with ancient knowledge effect on your Dwarven armor, your armor rating is now 500

Ancient Knowledge = learn smithing 15% faster, blessing from Warrior stone = learn smithing 20% faster, plus getting 8 hours sleep gives you WELL-RESTED = learn all skills 10% for 8 hours.... add all 3 buffs and you get learn SMITHING 45% faster.

Warriors Stone 20%
Aetherial Crown w/ Lovers Stone 15%
Ancient Knowledge 15%
Sleeping Bonus 10%
Lovers Comfort 15%
Mother's Love 25%

100% Smithing Bonus Experience

Though all the 3 last are sleeping bonus so dont know if they are stackable, if they arent then the bonus is:

75% Smithing Bonus Experience

Lover's comfort is only 5% as the other 10% is sleeping bonus, so you counted sleeping bonus twice since lovers comfort and sleeping bonuses don't stack.

I am not sure, but the Lovers comfort 15% bonus may actually be worse than sleeping bonus because it does not stack with the lovers stone so you probably lose the 10% sleeping bonus when you are married.

Mother's love does not grant any experience bonus unless you are using some kind of mod.

Unless I am wrong Mother's Love or Father's Love bonus only makes healing spells and potions more effective. I am not sure where you are getting that 25% bonus from.

Copy/paste from UESP

* In a normal bed, you receive the Rested bonus, which confers a 5% bonus to skill increases.
* In a bed that you own, you receive the Well Rested bonus, which gives you a 10% bonus to skill increases. This applies to beds in purchased houses and beds that you are allowed to sleep in in an inn.
* If you are married and you sleep in the building where your spouse is, you receive the Lover's Comfort bonus, which is a 15% bonus to skill increases.
* The Lover Stone provides this same 15% bonus permanently (unless you select another Standing Stone bonus), but it cannot be combined with any resting bonuses.
* (DG) If you're a vampire and you sleep in a coffin, you will receive the Vampiric Blood Rested bonus, which boosts your resistance to magic by 10% for one in-game day.
* (HF) If you have adopted a child and you sleep in the same house as your child, you will receive the Mother's Love or Father's Love bonus, which makes healing spells and potions more effective.

Guess i was wrong

Ancient knowledge does not specifically speed smithing skill learning by 15%(unless you have the unofficial patch installed). It improves tempering by 15%, which can have a decent impact on skill learning if tempering is a significant part of how you level( helps to do enchanting first so you can have a good set of smithing gear and alchemy learned double speed with alchemy gear so you can makes really good smithing potions). The max skill learning boost from stones and sleeping is 50%(all skills). Relevant guardian stone( constant), Lover's stone(stored in Aetherial Crown), sleep with spouse while crown is unequipped then equip the crown when you wake up.

I'm pretty sure OP has moved on after 3 years.
