I can't seem to figure out how to get back to solstheim...
I was in solstheim, then I decided to leave, and stopped playing skyrim for a while, now I can't remember how to get back.

There's A boat in Windhelm. Or, for those that like to fast travel, there's also a map marker stuck out at sea. :-)

board a ship from windhelm or open the world map and look for a white arrow on the far right of the map and click on it.

I tried the boat way, I went to windhelm and got on the only boat I recall seeing and nobody talked to me. I probably just didn't see the other boat...

If you're using the last character you played as, there should be a fast travel marker in the Northeastern part of the world map. Don't like Fast Travel for whatever reason? Windhelm docks. There's a ship there that'll take you to Solstheim.

"Whatever reason" would be intense roleplayer's. People that like to travel everywhere regularly

I don't see the arrow, and I don't get the option to go to solstheim... Wtf...

Odd - the Dragonborn DLC is still checked in your load order? There should be a Captain on one of the boats.

I don't have Dragonborn, but if you take the boat to Solstheim and fast travel back does the boat automatically return to Windhelm?

There is a captain, but upon talking to him, you are asked to do work. And I have not checked if it's still checked.

My understanding was that Solstheim was added to the map with the Dragonborn DLC but I may be more senile that I realised.

It is still checked. Maybe it's because I'm using SKSE?? Though I'm fairly sure that's not the reason.

You might try COC Solstheim and check out if you've actually done the things you recall doing in your last game. Something is really amiss here and no, SKSE wouldn't cause this problem. Maybe your save is corrupt, ugh!!

No your still mentally competent :-) I merely thought that the boat may still be in Solstheim dock if it was not used to travel back to Skyrim previously and Yoda just fast travelled from elsewhere.

Edit: I will eventually get the hang of these quote thingamies.

Hmm... so competent that I forgot to answer the actual question, didn't I. Tss.. what a moron. Anyway, the ship magically travels with you each way. Where abouts the equipment to perform this incredible feat is stored on board, though, is anyone's guess. :-)

Even if the boat didn't go back to skyrim after fast traveling from solstheim, I'd still be able to fast travel back. So whether or not I fast traveled has nothing at all to do with why I am not able to go back.
