Dead Dragons Not Giving Up Their Souls...
OK, I do have the Drgonborn DLC installed. I played awhile with a different character a few months back and I recall those cultists would occaisionally sneak in on my dragon kills and snatch the dragons' soul away from me after I killed the beast. The burning dragon flesh, flashing light streams coming off the dragon, etc; but the flashing lights went over my shoulder to some cultist behind me and he/she taunted me and ran off.

recently I started with my newer character with DB DLC still installed. This time around I have never seen the cultists directly steal a dragon soul right after combat - I am level 41 and have collected well over 30 dragon souls now.

But in the last week, I have killed three (3) dragons and had the dragons apparently not lose their soul at all on their death. I walk up next to the corpse, but no burning dragon flesh, no flashing light streamers - an no soul absorbed. I could loot the corpse in each case.

So was an update to DB DLC put out in the last few months, that changed the way the cultists mess with my mind?

Any mods?
Sounds like a conflict to me.
I have not had that problem for a long time. There are no other patches coming for this game and hasn't been for a while.

Not being able to absorb a dragon souls on death is a common bug that came with the dragonborn DLC. I think the unoffical patches them help to fix it and theres another few mods around that also do the same thing although I don't have any links on hand.

If you kill a dragon in the same place then it's considered that you already have that soul ... and it won't give up the soul!

That's the theory.

Having said that I use to have that happen quite often as well all over the place with my previous computer before I upgraded.... But I have hardly experienced it on my current playthrough on a new computer at level 76 with loads of souls.... !

I know previously if you had over 12 unused souls then there would be less random dragon attacks ..... that's my experience anyway ..... but recently even with 40 - 50 souls I was still getting random dragon attacks almost every fourth fast travel so who knows ....

Or has it more to do with which mods your using?

Didn't the Unofficial Skyrim patch fix this bug?

I read somewheret that the Dragonborn cultists can steal 50% of the dragon souls before you can absorb them if you have that DLC.

Pretty sure this and the unoffical dragonborn one both fixed the two main bugs that cause it to happen as the bug was introduced/made more severe (cant remember which) with the dragonborn dlc.

when you kill a dragon and you see the cultists, your seeing things, because it's only MIRAAK who shows up and steals the soul...not to worry - when he dies, you'll absorb souls from him-nice # of souls too...

Let me clarify the original post, so we can avoid nuanced debates;

1> Dealing with the first two paragraphs.

Miraak (we will stipulate to this, your honor) "intercepted and absorbed" several dragon souls from my previous character who was not as advanced in level as my current character. As I recall the game alerted me to the fact that a dragon soul was being taken from me in each case.

Neither Miraak nor anyone else, has EVER "intercepted and absorbed" a dragon soul that should have been absorbed by my current character. This is assuming that the current dragon soul theft techniques did not change since I played my previous character. The potential for an update to this technique is in fact, the very question being implied in the first couple of paragraphs of the originl post in this thread.

The debate as to whether it was Miraak himself, or one of his cultist followers who steals the dragon souls is of no real interest to me. However it eems I must lay everything out in the form of an engineering specification or a legal brief for some. That is ok, because I was a software engineer in the past.

2> New behaviour. Has only happened to my current character three (3) times - all within the last few days of real (or game) time;

a) I kill a dragon.
b) I approach the dragon's corpse.
c) The dragon's flesh does not spontaneously burn.
d) No visual effects indicating the dragon's soul is being transferred to me.
e) No message stating "Dragon soul ansorbed".
f) No special music.
g) I can loot the dragon normally.
h) A juicy dragon corpse with all the flesh left on the bones remains at the site.
i) I went back to the site of one of these kills to try to get the dragon soul a few days later and the dragon corpse was gone. I did get to fight another dragon at that time and upon killing it I was able to absorb it's soul.

@ReallyMeanGoldfish No mods since my last character. No known dragon/dragon cult mods after Dragonborn DLC was installed.

@Eternie "If you kill a dragon in the same place then it's considered that you already have that soul ... and it won't give up the soul!"

Same place being the programmed cells in the world that generate the encounters? I have killed at least 3 dragons at the vicinity of the Whiterun watch tower where the main questline starts. Absorbed all of their souls.

How do I know if I have installed the unofficial Skyrim patch? It has been several months since I touched anything to do with DLC or mods.

Thanks everyone.

- Open your Skyrim launcher and see the Data files view. Unofficial patches shold be shown there. You will also need patches for DLCs, if you have them (in this case at least the Dragonborn patch.)

- Load order is very importand with patches. Wrong load order will actually be able to activate this bug in the game, while proper order will fix it. Use LOOT to set your load order, if you already didn't. I will link all below.

.

i happens with me when you kill a dragon in you killed before like dragons on bounties you won't absorb it's soul becuase you done it before thats not a bug

I've only experienced this at Dragon Shrines. Apparently, if you already killed the dragon there, and another dragon spawns, it will not give its soul.
