I am going to boot up Skyrim now for a third or fourth checking of this. I am sure I got the message 'jewel identified', but I was sifting through items on a desk so may have misread.
It was during my foray in Rannvieg's Fast it happened. I had escaped the cage and you have to kill Sild the Warlock first. I was looking through the items on the table right next to the cage when you get out. I think there was a gem. I am fairly sure it was reading Sild's journal that did it.
I hope someone else finds it now, since someone up this thread couldn't. I am going back to the Fast now coz I want check out Rannvieg's Fast. You have to go down through the trapdoor. I don't know how anyone would miss it coz it looks like doors on the floor. It's right next to the chest at the end of the top level of the short cave system in Rannveig's Fast.
You may have identified the gem, but you still seem unaware as to its purpose, which wouldnt be the case if you had talked to Vex.
I looked in my journal, and still have the quest No Stone Unturned to do. This seems to suggest I have to identify the gem. Only I no longer have the entry in my journal to have to identify the gem. I have only one entry, 'Become a Full member of the Thieves Guild', under No stone Unturned.
This does look suspiciously like I have been mistaken. There is another of the Unidentified Gems in that area on that desk. I wonder if a message popped up saying, 'have found unusual gem', and I misread it. I was distracted as I was foraging the stuff on the desk.
We won't know until someone else goes through. What is clear is there is no mention of anything in Rannveig's Fast online that says gem identified.
I don't know why Skyrim quest item are so quirky. e.g. I picked up a stray bow in the sewers in Riften and even though I did not have the associated quest, it became a quest item that I thought I would never be rid of. Then I discovered that I could place the bow and other quest weapons on the wall mounted weapon display plaques in Whiterun Hut (a mod). I cannot otherwise store, sell, trade or drop other quest items from inventory. Some quest items cease to be quest items after completing the quest, but some remain quest items forever apparently.
I'm glad I went back for a look round anyway coz I found some True Shot and I am going bows. Also I found I hadn't done the Adept chest next to the desk, so I have that done now.
P.S. I was wondering about quest items storing, so thanks!
I seem to have more problems with high powered mages than I do with ancient dragons?! Probably because I have been pumping level bonuses into health and stamina mostly.
Also, I cannot recall a waypoint on my map with the name you mentioned. I'll look again when I get back in game.
@Draaf fah Hahlor
I have no quest journal entry for returning a Dravin Bow, so no waypoint on the map. That is a TG quest, right? I haven't even done the marketplace job for Brynolf.
If Dravin wants the bow he/she can drop by Whiterun Hut and I will sell it to him/her.
(Im playing a Heavy armor 2Hander, btw)
It is not a TG quest. You get it from Dravin himself, who asks you to retreave it from thieves. Finding the item does not activate the quest. Speaking with the elf will allow you to give it back.
Location:
He lives in a far, just next to Riften north gate. There is a short strech of road that leads there, starting from behind and/or north side of Riften stables
(Me too I haven't done the Brynoff job. I was bit taken aback with that. It gives you a choice to take it or not. However if you ask what the quest is about it takes it you have chosen to do it. It is added to your journal. I wasn't happy about that so I loaded up an earlier save before I spoke to Brynoff. Skyrim is good in that aspect, it works well quick-saving regularly. Quick-saving doesn't spoli the continuity at all, and I love it for that.)
I think I did the bow quest you mentioned. It's just a go get type, nothing do this do that first.
EDIT: Really enjoyed this thread whatever though. It went into a Thieves Guild debate briefly. (Anyway skyrim time - must play.)
I do not have that waypoint, and I plan to hop the ship to Solstheim on my next rotation around Skyrim. Yes, I go in clockwise circuits around the province, picking off missions as they interest me. I have completed Dawnguard DLC now and with that off my plate, I think it is about time I visited the island outpost of the Dunmer and the home of the last remaining Stahlrim.
As far as not following quests that the game assigns to you, just unselect them in your journal and let sleeping dogs lie. I have several quests that I do not pursue.
As I am asking favour I will do the hoework for you. Here is the map for location.

Before you go there check you journal entries for No Stone Unturned. I'd be particulalry interested to know if you have entry Identify Unusual Gem still there. (I don't.)
My theory now is this. Either speaking to the guy in Riften when the quest points you to the Theives Guild, removes that journal entry. Or what I did removes that journal entry. If it's what I did, you should see the message pop-up left top corner of your screen. That's when you are in Rannveig's Fast I mean searching the desk after you kill Sild.
(Yes I let quest go if I don't want them for now. Interesting heads up on the TG quests. I felt pushed by Brynoff's quest so I stayed clear. Each to their onw though as I am sure it makes sense.)
