Do not continue or launch the game.
- Exit Steam
- Go to Steam folder
- Remove folder named appcache

- Close your comptuer. Let it rest a while and start it again.
- Start Steam. It will now load a bit, while inspecting your game.

- From Steam client Library view, right click the game with your mouse.
- Select Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache. This will replace your modified master files - including Skyrim.esm.

* 1 file will always fail to validate. This is related to how Steam detects your graphic configurations and has no effect to your game.

In the future: Do not clean Skyrim.esm with TES5Edit.

Your game will not crash, unless mods or other master files (update.esm or DLC files) will use those records - and they will. When this happens your game will CTD. In worst case scenario crashing to desktop will become persistent.

Good grief.
Why did you even ask?

Do as you wish. Just do not write "**** BETHESDA for *****ing up my GAME. I CANT PLAY ANYMORE!!!" -thread, because we had enough of those for similar reasons.

If it does, then that is something we can actually fix. :D

You can clean the update, but never skyrim.esm itself. And if a problem persist then do what IIja states.

Update.esm is really only a patch and if you clean that and the DLCs you will always get a fix when verifying game of 66mbs. (If you have modded game verify it before cleaning and never after cleaning. (Sounds like double dutch but if you verify game straight after you clean it, it will revert back to your original settings. (why you cleaned it in the first place))
