Anyway to get a stray dog to go to your house?

I saved a stray dog from spiders, and it followed me. I told it to go home, assuming since it was a stray, that "home" was my house in Solitude. However, that isn't the case. Is there a way to get a dog to go to your house, or to buy a dog from someone?

I think there's a dog in Riverwood, or maybe that was the Barbas quest. Can't remember 100%. I don't remember seeing a mod that designates a dog follower's home. Maybe it's a tweak/setting in AFT though.....

Yes. The stray will follow you but if you tell it to go home then it returns to where you found it. If you want to keep the dog but don't want it to go with you then make sure it's in your home and tell it to wait here.

You can buy a dog for 500 Septims from the Markath Stables called Vigilance or pick up Meeko in the wilderness whose master has died. You can only have one animal follower in the vanilla game.

Edit: They are dogs. They can only follow, stay or attack.

With Hearthfire, you can adopt children. If you do so, leading a stray to your house may prompt them to ask if they can keep it. After that, the dog will return there when it's not adventuring with you.

Look for Meeko's Shack. It's in Morthal's hold. South of the Karth river and almost directly west of the Apprentice Stone.

Ok, thanks. So will this Meeko will remain at my house if I tell him to stay? He won't vanish or something?

According to the Wiki if you dismiss him (tell him to go home) he will return to Meeko's Shack even if you have a home. However if you have kids they may 'adopt' him. As I never use the kid option I cannot say whether he will then consider your home, his home.

Edit: Like any follower, three days is the maximum time they will wait before returning to where you found them.

Having tested it, I can say Meeko will consider your home his if he's adopted.

If you want Meeko and don't want him to die while adventuring, I believe there is a mod somewhere that will make your dog/horses essential, so they cannot be killed. That way he can travel with you all the time.
