Must I ride Shadowmere?
Or can I walk? I can't seem to fast travel when I'm around the damned horse.

Nevermind, it was because of a dragon nearby, and by nearby, I mean not even near me...

The Horse will follow you when you fast travel. I love that horse it is invincible and the best follower I have found.

You don't have to ride any horses. I've bought horses and got a free Stormcloak horse. When I do fast travel, the horse(s) are always there at the end of the trip, but I often leave on foot anyway to do some stealth archery on unsuspecting wolves, bears, spiders, bandits, etc.

troylights is correct you do not have to ride Shadowmere but he is a great help in an OBIS fight.

invincible?
mine died (during a bandit raid - a mod by the way)
but yeah, i have never had a need to ride it. in fact i didnt really want it in the first place :D

If you really don't want to ride it, just take it down a cliff. Not too big that you will also die but enough to kill the horse and for you to survive. Since he respawns, it's no loss but you have to go pick him up at his spawn point so that means you could kill it off then not go back to his spawn and never see it again.

This is only if it annoys you when you see him after every fast travel.

There's a bit more to it than that.[www.uesp.net]

Shadowmere is not essential and can die, unlike his counterpart in Oblivion. However, 10 days later, he will respawn at the location of his death. If Shadowmere dies in a river or lake, he will respawn after 10 days in the black pool near the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.

Haha, you must be a milk-drinking player then, because I "killed" him the first hour I had him by jumping him off a cliff. I thought he was invincible, but he was soon just a grease spot on the L & N. Stupid thing respawned on me later in the game, and I was like oh ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ what the ♥♥♥♥! a black horse with red-glowing eyes breathing down my neck—!!!! Oh, it's just Shadowmere. Get the hell outta here, you stupid horse. Didn't want you in the first place.

That was my character talking. He doesn't need things like a beast of burden when he has humans to do all his dirty work for him. Shadowmere–pah! More like Shadowdweeb.

EbonHawk have a lot of hours and didn't know he could die. Someone should make a mod to make him invincible.

Whether you like the Shadomere or not I fast travel and use him as a follower. I have never seen a bandit or groups of bandits that could kill him. Thanks for the info though.

I think it's Convenient Horses...doesn't it make horses necessary/unkillable? Can't remember; don't have it installed... will check.

Yep, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/14950/?

Plus a whole lot of other tweaks.
