What do I have to do in order to become Thane of The Reach?

I have completed The Heart of Dibella, The Forsworn Conspiracy, No One Escapes Cidhna Mine (favoring the Jarl), and The Lost Expedition. I approached the Jarl but he gave me no indication whatsoever. He old told me to do more work. What else is required?

Did you buy Vlindrel Hall? He cannot grant you the full perks of Thane before you have it.

Argis the Bulwark is part of those perks, your housecarl in the Reach. He settles to live in Vlindrel, so until he has a place to stay, the Jarl cannot help you there. Same goes for other cities. You must have a house there before the Jarl gives you the full perks which includes a local housecarl.

Lydia is the only housecarl that doesn't require a house purchase. But as soon as you buy Breezehome, that's where she will automatically move as well.

Basically you share all your houses with your housecarls until you decide to move them to another job. Except in Severin Manor.

on entering Markath, head straight to the Jarl and ask them for work. Complete the 'kill bandit' quest.
If Markath has been captured by your Civil War side, they will offer you the house right away./

Or if you negotiated the Reach to Stormcloaks in Season Unending, but then win it back by fighting on the side of the Empire. That works, too.

The Jarl don't offer me any quests to kill bandits or similar. He only asks me to talk to his Steward or gtfo. If I try to speak with his Steward he refuse to open a dialogue.

Do you have a bounty in the reach?
Do quests for the reach !
Like any innkeeper or any residents in the reach you need to get your reputation up!

Go and see the herbalist and do her messages run !

Don't expect everything up front without doing quests first

Normally you can ask Jarls for work and he or she will hint you to what you should do in order to become Thane. For instance Elisif the Fair in Solitude asks you to take care of the cave problem, and a personal matter of hers. Once those two quests are done she will offer you the position of Thane after helping five residents of Solitude. Heck, even the Jarl of Riften sent for me after finishing the related quests like The Book of Love. The Jarl of Markarth however don't give one single hint. Now I have done over five favors for the people of Markarth, and done the related quests as mentioned in the OP. Still the Jarl don't send for me, or give me the option to purchase property. Glitch?

"Prerequisite Quest: Find Hrolfdir's Shield or The Battle for Fort Sungard or Season Unending"

"If the jarl is Igmund, then you must complete Find Hrolfdir's Shield first. Note: in order to get Igmund to give you the Find Hrolfdir's Shield quest you must first do some mercenary quests given by both the Jarl and his steward"

That's as much as i could find. Are you sure you're talking to the correct steward? There's a couple of people in that room, but only one of them is the correct steward.

No bounty whatsoever; playing on my good character so to say. My reputation is very good as the majority of the citizens give me friendly comments. I have been following the Wiki in order to help anyone I can; unmarked to side-quest.
