Saarthal Bug
Hullo there!

In spite of the paid mod fecal storm currently affecting this forum, I would like to ask some advice on a rather obstructive bug I encounter during the first quest of the Magic University, Under Saarthal. I understand there can be a couple, though I can't find anything about the one I keep running into.

So I just entered Saarthal, Tolfdir told me to find some scholar and help him in his research. I start walking, but when I'm somewhere in the second room of the dungeon, the game just closes. No error message, no warning, no freezing computer. It just closes as if I hit the quit-button myself. Then Steam calmly synchronizes the game with the cloud as it always does after closing.

I'm not using any mods (I appear to be one of the few who doesn't feel affected by the paywall discussion) so I'm pretty sure there are no outside interferences. I've sunk about 250 hours in the game so far and this has never happened to me before.

Any tips or solutions?

There are some mod and non-mod related fixes in here. I can't offer any help other than what's here, either.

If I had to guess this could be a large number of problems, but have you tryed

1. Reloading to an earlier save?
2. Enter, advance time by resting, (exit and renter Saarthal as well)
3. Save, kill Tolfdir, reload?
4. Change graphic settings or point camera directly to the ground as you move?

Unfortunately Skyrim has a tendency to CTD with no error message or warning, which is rather frustrating to troubleshoot. One fairly common cause, though, is that the game is horribly badly 'optimised' in terms of memory usage and such. It might be worth checking some of the advice on Nazenn's guide here (under the memory section): https://steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/619573787397876592/ It does involve installing some things/editing their settings, but it shouldn't interfere with gameplay or anything, just make things a bit smoother.

(Someone else may have better advice as to why that specific area might be causing issues, but it's not an area I've heard of/experienced as being particularly problematic.)

I tried leaving the dungeon and resting, and it worked! After resting, the scholar I was supposed to talk to was just entering Saarthal. I talked to him immediately, advanced the quest and I could just continue on normally from there.

Perhaps the quest bugged out because the character hadn't actually loaded in the place where he had to be? I understand most of the characters, like Tolfdir and the students, actually walk to Saarthal, causing all manner of bug-related shenanigans.

Anyway, thanks for the quick responses guys. I just finished Saarthal without further incident :)

I would of just reloaded from an earlier save and restarted, but it's wprked for you your way :) TG for a thread about something else.

I just had a Night Mother quest where the the chef requesting the job refused to say anything else other than," I don't know you"
Stupic Cicero getting in the way was the cause I think, he stands in front of me chattering away while the mother is talking :(

Anyhow, I did a restart and it was ok that time.

Lots of saves and reloads seems to work for most bugs.
