Breezehome unlocked???
I was wandering around Whitreun after the civil war and when I tried to point the cursor against Breezehome's door, it is now unlocked and I can enter with no cautions or anything as if I bought the house. I tried talking to Proventus just to make sure that I DIDN'T buy the house and it seems I haven't indeed. Why is this so? This didn't happen to my previous character.

I have no problem with it anyway since I didn't lose any gold and guards doesn't warn me and receive any bounty but the fact that it was unlocked for no reason bothers me.

To make everything clear, read below:
  • Breezehome unlocked without buying it.
  • Happened after the civil war.
  • I tried reloading, no fix.
  • Proventus still offers me the house.
  • I haven't bought the house yet.
  • I don't receive any warnings when inside the house.
  • I don't receive any bounty when entering it.
  • Guards don't arrest me as if I have bought the house already.

Well, it is for free anyway, if you do the hide-money-in-cabinet trick, so nothing is lost that affect your gameplay.

Sounds like a glitch.

I don't know about the free house, but you'll need to "buy" it anyways if you want to furnish it. Also guards won't care if the house isn't yours as long as you have opened it already. It's generally only a problem if someone is living inside and catches you go in, but seeing as it's empty to begin with, it's no big deal.

Thanks for this. I was afraid having this bug would affect my game anytime in the future to the point I have to start over again.

I think it is or it could be a bug (if ever the two are different, but, anyway...). I also just read in UESP under the bugs section that Breezehome is indeed unlocked after the Battle for Whiterun quest.

QUOTE: "Upon completing the Battle for Whiterun, Breezehome will be unlocked even if you have not purchased the house. However, the steward still requires you to purchase the house for 5000 gold."

Yup, I just tried going to Proventus just to clarify if ever I DID NOT buy the house and it seems that I really didn't considering the option to buy the house is still there and most likely the options to upgrade the house too.

Somebody probably ran inside during the civil war, NPCs can unlock doors without the required keys.

I see then. That could indeed the reason be.
