1) install DLC Heathfire
2) Become Thane of a hold
3) Once a Thane you can then buy houses/land from the Jarle's Aide

There are houses available for gold in a few cities, after you've met some prerequisites. The easiest and cheapest "starter home" to get is Breezehome in Whiterun. All you have to do is complete the Bleak Falls Barrow quest, then you can buy it from Jarl Balgruuf's steward. There are several other homes available though.

Also, as has been mentioned, you can install Hearthfire which allows you to build your own house.

Check here for a list of homes in the vanilla game (as well as instructions on how to get them):

And here for a list of Hearthfire homes:

Ah, sorry, I misread your question. I thought you were asking how to buy a house too. :)

Ok, just check the second link I posted. There are a couple of things you have to do in each case before you can buy land. Each one is different.

(On a side note, I think Lakeview Manor in Falkreath sits on the nicest plot of land.)

Basically the highest level you need to be to build a house in hearthfire is 22 or 25 (according to the house's level you need to be before a certain quest initiates) So if you get hearthfire, you can do it in falkreath, the pale, and one other area but i can't remember lol.

Spelling is a bit off, bur basically correct. Becoming thane gives you the right to buy land, once you have the land Hearthfire then allows you to build a house on that property within certain paramaters. There are 3 variations after you build your entrance house and then a bigger addon, based on the positions with reference to the add on. Because I played a certain type, I usually picked a greenhouse, a kitchen just for one recipe, and the 3rd was for storage. But thats my play style.

You will receive a letter from the Jarl of Falkreath when you are about lvl 12 I think. When you go and speak to him he wants you to do two quests. After completing them he offers you a piece of land to buy from his steward. This becomes Lakeview Manor.

To also beome Thane you have to complete three tasks for the Falkreath citizens.

You're just a bit wrong there, Hearthfire is required to also buy land and build houses. In vanilla you can only buy houses in Whiterun, Markarth, Windhelm, Solitude and Riften.

Source: My character who is thane of every hold and has bought every possible vanilla house (I don't have any DLCs).

Agreed. You can't buy the land BEFORE getting hearthfire.
