The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Is The PS3 version of Skyrim good to play?
I only ask because I want to buy the game as a birthday gift for a friend.

I have Skyrim legendary version for PC and, with the help of this community, I've had an enjoyable experience playing and modding the bejeezus out of it.
Now, my friend, who is late 50's, usually just plays driving games and GTA on his PS3. I was planning on getting him the Legardary PC version for his birthday but after speaking to him (in pre-birthday code) he says he'd never be interested in using his Laptop for gaming. His decision I suppose ...

Anyway ... That leaves me with the option to get him the PS3 version but having only ever had the PC experience with this game, I thought I'd ask you all for advice.

I just hope I can get some sound advice before the arguments start ... ha ha

I'm not going to comment on if the vanilla game is good or not, but all I will say is that the ps3 version was the worst port and is widely acknowldged to be the buggiest and most problematic version of Skyrim.
Thanks Naz ...
I've done a quick Google search for "PS3 Skyrim bugs" and many people report that after the release of PS3 Skyrim legendary edition (with included patches??) the game has settled down with only very occasional freezes.
I'm hoping that someone who has that edition can confirm that fact.
You can always go wandering through the UESP and look at the bugs section of various pages and see what the comparison is like.
But regardless of that, the ps3 version is still the most unstable when it comes to freezing, save corruption, crashing etc, and also has the longest loading times etc, because like I said earlier, it was a horrible, horrible port that they really didnt optimize very well (bethesda not optimizing things, what a shocker. not XD)
Shame ....
I suppose I still have the option to get him PS3 version ... get him addicted ... and then when he can't take the bugs no more ... he has to get the PC version !!!
Hahahaha, thats an idea.
Im not saying that its not playable, a lot of people do play it on ps3, im just giving full warning that its not the most stable of versions, and concidering skyrims stability in general, thats saying something.
I own the PS3 Legendary Edition version. I played it for over a year before I got the pc version. It does have bugs, but not all that many. The most common bug is the frequency of dragons. In several profiles I went from level 4 to level 30 without ever seeing a dragon. Except the one you kill for the Jarl of Whiterun, and the dragons on their roosts. But random Dragons? Nope. Not a one.
I played the PS3 version of Skyrim multiple times, and never really had much of an issue with it. There were a few times when things went awry, but not enough or bad enough to keep me from playing it. If the PC version is definitely out, then I think the PS3 version is fine to play. I actually kinda wish it were available on the PS4 since I prefer playing consoles over PC games myself...
More food for thought ......
I do like the idea of him really getting into Skyrim and me constantly saying to him ....

Have you tried the Frostfall mod ..
Oh you can't use mods !!
Have you tried the i-needs mod
Oh you can't use mods !!
Well have you tried the SkyRe mod
Oh you can't use mods !!
well you must have used the pure waters and weather mod
Oh you can't use mods !! etc etc etc
The PS3 version have bad graphics, so if you have a good pc, install it now ;)
No idea, but PS3 does have the latest update (1.9.something), so it shouldn't be too bad. Most bugs addressed by the unoffiical mods are barely noticeable (minor texture glitching, etc). But there may still be oddities affecting quests and gameplay.
i first started playing Skyrim on my ps3 and it sucked - as it kept freezing up every few minutes, so i took the game back to future shop and they said to buy the PC version, - only problem was i didn't own a computer, heck i didn't even know how to turn one on. Well i bought a 1,000 dollar PC and a PC version and now i have logged over 5,000 hours now. NO do not buy your friend the ps3 version, buy him a PC instead.
if thats all he has he will still like the game i started on the ps3 and it was just fine the bulk of the bugs have been fixed
Keep in mind that your friend's PC may not be able to handle past a few basic mods. Is his laptop strong enough to enjoy some of the great visual mods, hi res textures, etc? Or do his graphics run on an intel chipset that can't push it? Just food for thought.

I've never played Skyrim on PS3, but a friend of mine, also in his 50s, is still playing the game to this day, modless, on PS3 and still loves it.
That's a very good point, hazmat, I hadn't considered if his laptop could actually run the game. I assume it will as it's about 18 months old but .... never assume ..... it makes an ass out of you and me .... or so the old saying goes.
Depends on the machine. When I bought mine, I made sure that it had an nVidia chipset for gaming. Intel handles all the day-to-day work. You should be able to find out pretty easily what's in his machine if you can get a look at device manager, or even get the model number to look up.
