Can i do Dawnguard & Dragonborn before main story ?
Hey guys, played the main story several times. Started a new character now and want to play dawnguard & dragonborn (never played those). Is it possible to complete both before main story without any problems ?

You can do Dragonborn before the Main Quest, but you will require the scroll from main quest to finish the Dawnguard.

You can totally the only limitation being that you do need to go to the greybeards and be at least level 10 for Dragonborn whereas for Dawnguard there is a higher level requirement.

So you do need to know that you are the dragonborn before trying to do the other DLC

Don't they need the "Dragon" Elder Scroll to finish Dawnguard?
It is possible that my memory fails me.

They need the "Dragon" Elder Scroll, but you can just get it like you would in main quest, without doing the main quests.

Ilia You posted just seconds before me I'm not contradicting you.
Dawnguard definately needs the Dragon Elder scroll and Dragonborn only activates once you are acknowledged as the dragonborn by the greybeards

I still think that you can get the Dragon Elder Scroll without doing the main questline though.

My dear Eternie.

I did not think that you were contradicting me.

And I often speak nonsense. I ask very nicely to be corrected when I do. :)

You can, you just have to do that part with talking to Urug (the orc dude) at the College of Winterhold. He points you to Signus or whatever his name is and from there to the Elderscroll.

My Dear Ilja.

Wow.... what a formal greeting I thank you most profoundly kind Sir!

We all have moments of clarity and others where perhaps it's not as clear.

It is a dam good game and several other forums have also agreed that the dragon scroll is the only main quest Requirement.
Which would require doing the main quest upto Elder knowledge, before being able to complete both DLC

That makes redoing the next playthrough as an alternative!

You can do Dawnguard as non-Dragonborn, because I've done it (my first time to Blackreach, in fact!), BUT you will need to be prepared to cast a spell to gain access to the College (and join it), i.e. you can't use the 'I'm the Dragonborn, pal, can't you make an exception?' line if you're, well, not the Dragonborn (or don't know you are). So, as long as you aren't insisting on playing a complete non-mage, you're fine :)

AFAIK there's no level requirement for Dragonborn (although it's a braver Mer than I who attempts it with one or no followers before about level 20 minimum, Solstheim is harsh) but Dawnguard starts throwing itself at you from level 10 (without a mod like Timing is Everything.)

Don't even need to go to the College of Winterhold as long as you know where Signus is located.

I can confirm. I've done Dawnguard w/o having visited the Greybeards or joined the College of Winterhold. Several times in fact.
I've never done Dragonborn w/o doing that; but I do know you can go to Solstein well in advance of it if you know where the ship is located @ Windhelm. Not that I'd even think of trying short of level 30.
