Advice? I Have No Main Quests Available
Greetings.

I have been playing Skyrim for a very long time. I was content just discovering stuff, causing havok, and just being happy-go-lucky while doing whatever interesting quests came my way. So, I decided it was time - put this game on the "Finished" list. So . . .

I have discovered that I have no selectable Main Quests in my journal, I have not finished the game, that is for sure. What gives? Is this a problem or not? I have no idea how to get back into the chewy bits of main quests. Can somebody provide some insight?

Thanks for any help.

Did you start any part of the main quest other than escaping Helgen after ther tutorial?

looks clear to me; you are doomed to play skyrim for the rest of your physical life and beyond.

Did you used mods like Live another live or Skyrim unbound?

If you have never been to Whiterun to tell Jarl Balgruuf about the dragon attack on Helgen then try talking to him and see if you can start the main quest that way. If you haven't been to Bleak Falls Barrow to get the Dragonstone you might try talking to Farengar in Whiterun (in Dragonsreach) and see if he will give you the quest.

You always can enter bleakfalls Barrow to get the stone no quest needed from Farengar if you want the quest you can always try Lucan (riverwood trader). However I suspect something else because it seems he hadn't the quest to talk to Balgruuf in the first place..... I think he had LAL or Skyrim unbound in his loadorder.

The individual sections of the main quest aren't marked "main quest", IIRC. I agree that going to the palace in Whiterun is a good first step if you've not already done so.

Start reading until you get to something you don't remember, or matches one of the quests in your journal, then go there in game.

Yeah - like an hour after my post. I was hovering over the screen. I do have stuff to do you know. ;)

As for all of the other suggstions, thanks, I will try them and see if something works. Process of elimination might do the trick. I can't say exactly at what point I was in the main quest; I have played of and on for years (and hour and hours) and never really kept the storyline straight in my mind. So as I mentioned I was hoping to knock this out after all of this time!

On a related note, Skyrim is an incredible experience.

Thanks to everyone for all of the help. If nothing works, i will get back with some more specific information based upon the insightful resonses.

Okay - here is what I did:

I printed the main quests list. Went to my journal and checked off all of the quests on my list against the one I printed. It seems I need to get the storyline rolling again with the "Paarthurnax" quest.

I did discover, which I am sure you Skyrim grognards already knew, that the completed quests are listed in order of completion; from most recent to the oldest. That made it easy to figure out.

Thanks again for all of the great replies.

If I had it to do over again, I would have done the entire main quest immediately from the start and then do the entire Civil War quest immediately following the main quest and after that side quests. The main quest-line and civil war quests are so good compared to the rest of the game that its such a shame that people (like me) get side tracked for months doing meaningless fetch quests and bandit raids that they forget all about the main threads and eventually stop playing without seeing the main quest and civil war through.

I'm trying to talk a close friend of mine into revisiting Skyrim; he quit after 100 hours and never even made it to High Hrothgar, which I think is the 2nd or 3rd objective in the main questline.

Okay - I apparently missed a few quests on my list, in fact. I have them all completed. That would explain why I have none to choose from!

So, with that in mind . . . .

Apparently I finished the game. I don't remember anything of note happening that would suggest or indicate I finished the main quest storyline. Is there somthing else I need to do in order to officially complete the game? Or is the ending really that uneventful?

Do you remember travelling to Sovengarde, the Nord afterlife, and fighting Alduin (the big black dragon from the start of the game) with a bunch of long-dead Nords? It's... well, I've not actually played it but I've watched footage and it's kind of anti-climactic, I guess, but it's fairly clearly The End Of The Main Quest because the main quest is all about defeating him (and thus lessening - although not completely doing away with - the dragon menace, and averting the end of the world and such.) The main quest in Skyrim is, given it's all about killing a massive god-dragon (or demi-god, or son of a god, I'm a little hazy on the details) who's trying to end the world, kind of not exactly the best bit of the game, no.

There's no end credits or anything like that, though, no.

The game is sandbox in that it really never ends; there is no true "final boss" with a cutscene, credits, and a "THANK YOU FOR PLAYING" splash screen. You can finish the MQ and then just keep farting around killing bandits if you want to.
