The horse I bought saved my life one time. I adore horses now.
Eliminate the anti-realism (As far as Skyrim's realism can go) of outright fast travelling and pay for a carriage (yeah, it's essentially the same as fast travel functionally, however it does make sense in Skyrim's universe and it costs money so it's not completely effortless).
1) Can't attack anything so you constantly have to get off and kill stuff.
2) I'm OCD about picking flowers and mushrooms and things, and they're so common that you can't go two paces without seeing them, so again, have to keep getting off.
3) They'll get themselves killed by mindlessly charging into battle with a sabre cat on the other side of the map.
4) I prefer sneaking everywhere.
I use the Better Fast Travel - Carriages and Ships mod so I can't fast travel anywhere, except for carriages, which cost more the further away places are, so it normally takes me forever to get anywhere, but it's better that way as you see more.
It made me cri.
Arvak (From Dawnguard questline), Shadowmere (From Dark Brotherhood questline).
2) Convenient Horses
3) Convenient Horses
4) Fast travel is only good for places you have already been to. Horses can climb mountains.
1) If you have Dawnguard DLC, Arvak.
Reasons to buy a horse:
1)Ally in battle
2)1000 gold can be easily made through simply carrying and selling loot you find in dungeons/on bandits/etc.
3)You CANNOT fast travel while overencumbered but while riding on a horse you CAN. So you don't have to drop something just to be able to move around at a reasonable speed.
