Each city has merchants. They are often collected to same areas within these cities. They buy gear that is within their speciality.

For example Whiterun.
- Smith gear: Adrianne and her husband in and outside of War Maiden or Eorlund at Skyforge.
- General goods: Belethor, in his General Goods store.
- Hunting Gear: The Drunken Huntsman.
- Food: Market square and the Bannered Mare.
- Alchemy: Arcadia's Cauldron.

Just speak to the merchant between 8am. and 8pm - inns are always open. Ask them "What do you have for sale" and the merchant window opens up.

You can switch between merchant's inventory and your own by clicking ALT-button.

And as you level up you can increase your speech skill to get better deals, and also sell stolen items.
There are usually general merchants in every town. In whiterun (at least for a while), head straight down the middle road when you enter and you come to a market place with a general store, an alchemist and various vendors. Also, when you come into town and almost immediately to your left, theres in inn that sells/buys "hunting supplies". To the right is a blacksmith to unload your weapons at. And buy new ones, of course. Most shops have a hanging sign outrside them indicating what they offer.

Take to any merchant and ask what he/she has for sale. The screen will pop up and you'll see their inventory and your inventory options. Go into your inventory to sell things to them, buying obviously from their inventory.

Use merchants.

The best way to sell items is to equip a thieves guild hood/Masque of Clavicus Vile, Amulet of Dibella/Articulation, receive the Blessing of Dibella/Gift of Charity, drink a potion of haggling / glibness and then sell items for maximum gold.

ALT? that doesn't work. I know how to talk to him and everything, but there's no indication of my inventory at all and nothing happens by clicking ALT

It changes between the merchant's and your inventory so you can buy and sell easier

I usually hit up Riften at lower levels because the merchants are all there side by side,..
I usually will check the total amount of what I have to sell, then I will buy to hit that dollar figure as close as possible,..then I sell everything that I need to get rid of,..have fun,.

Wait. I am unsure, if this was implemented in vanilla game. I have been using SkyUI so long that I forget that everyone doesn't yet use it.

If you are using vanilla game view, then your gear should be visible, when you scroll down the merchant bar, under your character name.

I found it. My list were below, I just couldn't see it.

You may wish to try out SkyUI that I mentioned. It makes the UI less clunky and allows you to sort your gear according to several variables.

It also has Mod Menu Manager (MCM) included. Several mods require it, so you can configure them in game.
