Boring combat is killing me
So far I have spend 28 hours in this game and I am seriously considering to stop playing since it is less fun than expected which I mainly attribute to the poor combat experience.

Melee combat is simply walking up to an enemy and mashing a button which feels completely underwhelming and devoid of any action in the first person perspective. Maybe Dark Souls has spoiled me but the melee combat in this game is simply boring as hell.

With bows and crossbows also there is hardly any action due to the slow firing rate.

Spell casts also are slow as hell and since switching spells in the menu is such a pain in the ass which takes the entire tempo out of the fight instead of using my arsenal to the full potential I simply spam fireball most of the time - which is good enough since Lydia and that flame astronarch mostly kill all ♥♥♥♥ by themselves.

I loved Fallout 3 for the intense gun fights especially open air which really took some skill in positioning, movement, aiming and switching weapons. Compared with FO3 this game is a total snoozefest.

There is really much about this game I like like the large open world and magnitude of content so I really want to like it but what is the point if it is just boring to play.

Any suggestions for mods? I think you have an idea what I am looking for.

My favorite mod which enhances enemy AI among other things, is Skyre. I can't even go back to vanilla now.

Duel - Combat Realism and Combat Evolved will make AI alot smarter

Well the ones mentioned above are good. and the there are big overhauls like skyrim redone or requiem. maybe you should also have a look at ultimate combat.

Combat evolved + Revenge of the enemies + Ultimate combat
Immersive creatures and OBIS for more monsters and impressively varied bandits
Proper aiming if using bows/crossbows
Get those 3 they are meant to work together.
It makes combat so much more satysfying.

Never an excuse for a empty game, with core RPG elements taken out, casualised, made into akimbo spell "oh look at me, I can do everything as there is no defined role playing" magic wizard fetch questing boringness of draugr.

They got lazy with Skyrim and it shows. If anyone played Oblivion they should see where I'm coming from.

Play legendary mode without crafted armor. Crafting is simply overpowered in this game, mostly because enemies can't get the same gear. And also the part where only the player has access to perks. Mods change that, but you sound like you're not interested in mods.

Or would you have it like Dark Souls where some may find it too difficult and simply rage quit?

Unfortunately no mods will help in your case. They all claim to change combat dynamic to be somehow more realistic and dynamic, but in essense the only thing that changes is the amount of damage dealt/recieved. So yes, sometimes you will have to dodge occasionally and come up with some minor tactical advantage here or there (or most likely just cheese and abuse stupid AI, depending on how far you go on increasing combat difficulty), but the essense of combat will always stay the same, so you have to deal with it.
Imho, big and beautifully crafted worlds are the only good thing in all bethesda RPGs, the rest of the content ranged from so-so to terrible.

Dark souls isn't too difficult, it's one of the best game out there.

It is when you play with mouse and keyboard. I didn't learn to how parry or block until 8 hours into the game. It is hard but combined with the terrible PC port makes it rather difficult.
