Is Fultheim a member of the Blades?
Is he? Fultheim of the Nightgate Inn seems to have the blades sword. Does this mean he is one of the blades or did he just murder a blade for the sword?

He can be many things. Skyrim is filled with questions without answers.

- Maybe he is a blade who ran away and didn't look back. Like Esbern, he might be thinking that there is nothing to be done.

- Maybe he is a murderes, who killed a member of Blades that was researching the legend.

- Maybe he is a Thalmor assassi, carrying blade to lure existing Blade's members to conversation and thus reveal themselfs.

- Maybe he is adventurer like Dragonborn and just happened to found a body, looted it and kept what he thought was most practical.

- Maybe is father was adventurer and found this sword from a dungeon and then gave it to his son. Or, maybe he was a farmer, who spent his fortune to buy this blade to protect his family.

I believe he is. The dude looks fairly old, but carries a Blade's sword. If you ask about him in the Nightgate Inn, you'll learn that he's "drinking away unwanted memories". Perhaps he could've fought in the Great War, in which the Blades were nearly destroyed, and lost something more precious than simply the rest of the Organisation. Maybe a loved one.
The Great War is regarded by NPCs as a very bloody crisis, as evidenced by people like Camilla and Lucan Vallerius leaving the supposed heartland of the Empire to a far more dangerous land like Skyrim.
Perhaps Fultheim was a Blade, lost someone close to him in the Great War, and took a vow of peace. A bit like Melus Petillius from Oblivion, who took a vow of peace after he lost his wife to a fever, laying down his weapon in honour of someone who wouldn't want him to get hurt.
Sad guy.

also Fultheim will attack on sight if you wear a full set of Thalmor Robes, which confirms the whole blade thing
