Falkreath can't talk to the Jarl to start bandit quest

Hey, I got a letter to go talk to the Falkreath Jarl, but the letter is for winstad manor? When I get down to Falkreath and try to talk to the Jarl he is hiding in a room and not on his Throne, he is happy to see me but won't even give me a quest to go kill the bandits, nor will his steward. I can talk to others in Falkreath but no quest trigger. I have started the bleakfalls quest but not finished. I have given the tusk to the merchant in whiterun but other than that I haven't done much. Ideas?

Ok so, yes I have verified the game cahce, no change still won't talk to me. I have even deleted all save games and started again. Got the same dodgey winstad manor letter/falkreath request still the blighter won't talk to me.

read the letter, then check your quest log and see if it got activated

Gonna assume you've already done the Dark Brotherhood quest and Helvard is dead. Off the wiki:

This can be worked around by changing the relationship rank of Nenya to 3 using "player.setrelationshiprank 19823 4". If it doesn't work, using "player.setrelationship 19822 2" on Jarl Siddgeir and "resurrect 1" on Helvard.

Yea sorry should've read your first post more carefully. The DB is the most frequent cause of this happening so I just assumed.

That said, the Jarl's relationship rank might still be messed up and the ones posted above are slightly wrong actually.


Try typing:
player.getrelationshiprank 19822

Take note of the value displayed. If its negative or less then 3, he won't initiate the dialogue with you. If that is the case, type:

player.setrelationshiprank 19822 3

Forgot to add, you should do the same with Nenya. Check her rank, and change accordingly if it is too low.

Lastly if that doesn't work, my only other idea is to wait til you progress further in the Civil War storyline and turn over that hold to the Stormcloaks. That should give you a second opportunity to purchase with a different Jarl.

Thanks, sort of a win? although the Jarl is set to ally he won't talk to me but fixing his Steward to rank 3 did allow me to purchase the house, although I did no previous quests for the town. Weird, but it fixed it. How odd.

First, get him when on the throne tell him you got the letter, he will want you to do a little job for him. When done return and talk to him thats when he offers property, ask again for work, thats when he says there is room in his court for a new thane.
