Trouble with enchanting

Hey guys, just got skyrim with steam and noticed that when I use an arcane enchanter, my soul gems don't show up. I'm also unable to charge my weapons. I have plenty in my inventory, but I'm unable to use them. I anyone knows a fix or has had the same problem, any help would be much appreciated.

Hate to start off with such a basic question but...do they have the souls of your enemies in them?

Because you have to trap souls in them. They're useless on their own.

I'm not. You say you just got the game, so I'm wondering whether or not you knew that. I'm not trying to make fun of you. Sorry if that's not the case. If they ARE filled, then, yeah, that's a problem.

I also don't know of any issues that would make filled soul gems not register with the enchanting and charging menues. Might could be one of the many issues introduced by DLC. In which case, you'll need the Unofficial Patches (you should have those anyway). Are you running any mods?

Well I've played on a friend's xbox with my own character before and enchanted weapons without knowing that. How does one go about doing that, because I never did anything different before

No mods. All I've downloaded is the game straight from steam

You need the "Soul Trap" spell. It's an Apprentice-level Conjuration spell you can buy from a court wizard or College of Winterhold instructor.

Occasionally, you can find filled soul gems in the inventories of some merchants, but they're expensive.

It could be just that you do not have a filled soul gem, they might all be empty. Empty soul gems will not show at the Enchanting Alters, or give you the option to charge your weapons either. When a soul gem is full it will say what kind of soul it has inside it in your inventory like this: Petty Soul Gem (Petty), or Grand Soul Gem (Common). You can buy filled souls gems, or you need to learn either the Soul Trap enchantment for your weapons, or the Soul Trap spell you can cast on something before you deal a death blow to it. For people you will need a Black Soul gem to capture their soul, animals will fill the other soul gems.
