Have a look at the top of the item description and it might say "Stolen" so you will then have to find a dodgy trader to sell them to.
Just a thought .
The items in red were items I stored in the chest at High Hrothgar, then collected after delivering the Horn, so maybe that counts as stealing by the games morals.
Thanx for the heads up on that room chest Incunabulum.
That's fine, but if it stays marked as stolen, you won't be able to sell it to regular merchants and if you get arrested it will be confiscated, so it's worth bearing that in mind, and it's best not to stash stuff in chests in businesses/homes that don't belong to you in future (it's fine to stash stuff in chests in ruins, bandit forts etc, although after a few in game days they will probably vanish as the cell resets, but if you just need to store some stuff for a day or two it works okay). There are also a couple of places where it's pretty safe to stash things even though you don't technically own them, namely your room in the College of Winterhold and at least some of the containers in the place where Farkas tells you you can pick a bed and fall into it in Jorrvaskr.
SpeedFreak. I don't own breezehome yet, coz if there is a local estate agents, then they don't advertise themselves. :) One of my minor criticisms of Bethesda is that their character interaction dialogue is far too crude and limited. Any characters I meet in Whiterun for instance, who don't just dismiss me with a sentence, may seem to offer information about Whiterun, but actually just trot out the exact same mini history schtick, so apart from the map, I've got little idea about what goes on where! Somebody advised me that I can get a horse to carry stuff for me, but I've bought a horse and all I can do is ride it so far! I have joined the Companions now though, so I'm storing stuff in a dresser near my bunk for the moment.
