Stored Items in red type!
Having rented the 'attic' room at the inn at Riverwood, I noticed the chest and offloaded some items there. Then I had to go to High Hrothgar with Jurgens Horn, and when I came back to the inn to put more in the chest, some of my items were in red type! They were still there, but it made me think that maybe they're at risk. Anyone know why they should be written in red?

Have you been a naughty boy and stolen some items then mixed those in that chest ? ,
Have a look at the top of the item description and it might say "Stolen" so you will then have to find a dodgy trader to sell them to.
Just a thought .

Stolen items appear in red :) Nothing to worry about, unless the guards catch you, of course.

Because that room is only yours for a day. After that, the chest 'claims' some of the stuff stored in it and if left too long the whole chest will replace its inventory with new stuff - making the current contents dissapear.

Have I stolen some items! What sort of a Nord do you take me for! :)
The items in red were items I stored in the chest at High Hrothgar, then collected after delivering the Horn, so maybe that counts as stealing by the games morals.
Thanx for the heads up on that room chest Incunabulum.

It doesn't matter whether or not you stole previously - the inn has claimed those items and taking them will be considered stealing from the *inn*, not its possible previous owners. Technically, as far as the game is concerned, *all* those items are no longer owned by you, the ones not read have just been assigned 'no-owner'.

Thanx Incunabulum. I don't care what the game thinks, that's MY hard earned gear! So I'm having it anyway. :)

That's fine, but if it stays marked as stolen, you won't be able to sell it to regular merchants and if you get arrested it will be confiscated, so it's worth bearing that in mind, and it's best not to stash stuff in chests in businesses/homes that don't belong to you in future (it's fine to stash stuff in chests in ruins, bandit forts etc, although after a few in game days they will probably vanish as the cell resets, but if you just need to store some stuff for a day or two it works okay). There are also a couple of places where it's pretty safe to stash things even though you don't technically own them, namely your room in the College of Winterhold and at least some of the containers in the place where Farkas tells you you can pick a bed and fall into it in Jorrvaskr.

Thanx gnewna, that's just what I needed to know. Fortunately the red stuff is books and Dragon Bones and Scales, so I won't be selling them I guess, but I will try not to have them confiscated. :)

If you have a follower, you can ask them to carry anything you don't want confiscated, just in case you accidentally get in trouble (like hitting an NPC during a vampire attack if they get in between you and the vamps).

I presume you own breezehome at that stage why the H... take the risk to put gear in a chest that doesn't belong to you?

Good tip gnewna! Thank you.
SpeedFreak. I don't own breezehome yet, coz if there is a local estate agents, then they don't advertise themselves. :) One of my minor criticisms of Bethesda is that their character interaction dialogue is far too crude and limited. Any characters I meet in Whiterun for instance, who don't just dismiss me with a sentence, may seem to offer information about Whiterun, but actually just trot out the exact same mini history schtick, so apart from the map, I've got little idea about what goes on where! Somebody advised me that I can get a horse to carry stuff for me, but I've bought a horse and all I can do is ride it so far! I have joined the Companions now though, so I'm storing stuff in a dresser near my bunk for the moment.
