Spider mod?
I'm a huge elder scroll fan, and I've really been wanting to try out this game now that the legendary edition has been released, however, I have a bit of a problem:

I'm have a bit of a case of arachnophobia, and the first time I played this at a friends house...well...you know what happens in the first dungeon you go into.

My question to you guys is: someone told me there's a mod you can download that replaces all the spiders ingame with giant bears/other animals. Is this true or am I incorrect?

Normally I'd grumble that you could have googled it yourself, however, I imagine that might risk coming across some upsetting pictures, so just this once -

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/26468/? (OH MY GOD IT GETS RID OF CHAURUS! I can handle the spiders just about but chaurus creep me RIGHT out)

There doesn't seem to be much on the Steam Workshop (one, but it looked very basic and I don't like to point people towards things that I wouldn't at least consider installing myself, it had basically no real information in the description, so...)
There is an fact. MXR featured it on one of his very first videos. A mod which replaces all spiders with bears and is quite terrible. If you look up his series on Youtube you can find the name of the author.

Surely though leaving them intact just adds to the atmosphere and a sense of accomplishment once you've killed them.

That's fine if you just have a mild dislike of spiders (like me - I go ARGH when I see them IRL or on screen, but that's generally it), but if you've got a full-blown phobia, it probably won't really work like that... I find beetley things far more unsettling (like Chaurus) and I pretty much have to look away from the screen when they appear - not really helpful for killing them!

Not to flame or troll or anything like that but my IRL wife has a huge fear/hatred for spiders but playing the game has helped. She can now kill them, smaller ones anyway, by herself. If it weren't for my ability to lift heavy objects for her, she wouldn't need me anymore.

Yeah, unfortunately it's not something that's easily gotten over. Even the small ones in-game freak me out, so you can imagine my reaction when the giant ones appear. It doesn't help that it's face fills my entire monitor...*shudder*

Thanks for the information by the by. And CAP, it's an idea...not sure if I wouldn't give myself a heart attack by trying though lol.

Blasting them with fire is quite pleasing, I find. I used to be much more afraid of spiders then I lived with a big, burly boyfriend who was way more afraid of them than I am, and it was down to me to get them out of the flat. I wouldn't say I ever had a proper phobia, though (now wasps, on the other hand, I cannot deal with AT ALL and, were housing as cheaply available IRL as in Skyrim, I would gladly lock the front door and find a new home if it meant I didn't have to deal with a wasp. Okay, I might send someone to get my stuff.)
FOR THE LOVE OF ARKAY DON'T GET THE ONE THAT TURNS THEM INTO BEARS
Seriously, the guy did no work whatsoever on the mod and literally just replaced the spider model with the bear one. What you get instead of spiders is completely static bears sliding around at weird angles, hissing and inexplicably throwing venom bombs at you.

I'm sorry, but I lol'd a bit imagining that first encounter with a giant spider :)

As an alternative to the above with the mod to change the spiders, I actually use the Voice of the Sky Forever mod, which makes most wildlife friendly, so they won't attack. It won't take the spiders out of the world, but at least you should be able to avoid those pants-crapping sneak-attacks from them. And hey, maybe if you can spend time hanging out with the friendly spiders, it'll be like therapy for your phobia :)
Something to do with phobias, not to spiders, but claustophobia used to be my problem. I am glad I am mostly over it. Some of the dungeons in Skyrim are quite tight and small. Until I read this discussion I didn't realize that I am not completly cured as I now realize why some of the dungeons scared me more than others.

Yeah, even I get creeped out by the spiders, I'm over it now seeing I've played this game a ton but when you're at a higher level the only really scary thing is cliffs, terrifying.

If you can take something that's a little bit scarier than a normal spider so long as it's not an actual spider...

It's spider-man with the spider's animations. Nightmare material regardless, but could be an improvement.
