Nord mages a thing?
It seems to me that nords have some lore based magical prowess based on dragon priest, harkon, and miraak both being fairly adept mages themselves. But then again Harkon and Miraak have both had 1000s of years to hone their skills and even with all that time their skills are nothing to do a flip over based on fighting them. So what is all of your opinions on the matter? I really wanted to role play a ancient vampire nord and I am heavily into lore.

Thank you in advance friends and fellow members of the PC master race.

Nord Mages can totally be a thing, infact, my next Character is going to be an Orc mage! (Granted, Skyrim doesn't have stats like earlier Elder Scrolls games, so Orcs aren't considered dumb as ♥♥♥♥ having the least INT)

Nords dislike of magic is "fairly new" (when you compare it to this observers point of view), as it is told later during the main quest. While they do not appreciate magic now, they have done so in past and might do so again in future. Playing a nord magic user is quite lore friendly and Whiterun court wizard is also a nord.

Nords don't have extra magicka or magic resistance built in so thats a disadvantage at the beginning but that can be overcome.

Lore wise Nords in general distrust magic, they regard it as foreign and elf-ish.

Ancient Nords appeared to be different but current Nords have no link to the past. It has to be said that most magic practitioners of the past were of the Dragon cult and they were overthrown as being cruel and despotic, which together with their mistrust of Elves makes modern Nords distrust magic and those who practise it.

Jarls tolerate them for the most part for their usefulness, but they generally live within the palace itself, those who live outside suffer prejudice.

There's a Nord studying at the College, he's had a hard time from his family about it, but the DB can be assumed to have no family/have left their family behind for good/have a family which doesn't hold with these traditions and maybe that's even why they left Skyrim for Cyrodiil, or caps other ideas depending how you want to roleplay.

I see no conflict at all. While a Nord might not possess a racial bonus or be naturally "inclined" to being a mage based upon racial attributes, that has nohing to do with individual skills or gifts. And while the current climate is definitely mistrustful of mages, it is not surprisng that there are not many Nord mages who choose to be open about their skills. But that they exist is undoubtable, and likely in greater quantity than actually practice.

I am currently roleplaying a Breton Witchhunter (Clothes, Bow, Destruction Magic and Conjuration Magic (Atronachs), a bit of stealthy tricks now and then, Alchemy, Enchanting, Speech) but, once i am finished with him, i want to play a proper Nord Mage - Destruction and Restoration, Alteration, Mage Clothing and a Mace. I hope it will be fun :) And fret not, even Shor approves of the arcane arts and disapproves of the recent shunning of the grand art by the "new" generations.

Remember that none of the player races are connected to a hive mind. Men and Mer can be a funny lot and you'll always get some people who go against their social norms.

There was an Argonian, who lived on the shivering isles, who honestly believed himself to be a Khajiit in disguise. This was a thing.... So... Yeah... if you can't come up with a logical sounding reason you can always claim a Daedric Prince did it. God I've got a mental image in my head of a young Nord, wearing fake elf ears, shouting at his family that he's going to run away to the Summerset Isles because superior elven culture.
Kudos xD

Yes it is a thing , Shalidor for example was a powerful Nord Archmage and Haymon Camoran was a powerful sorcerer and he was a Bosmer witch we all know what gameplay Bosmer are usually related to. The lore in Elder Scrolls will let you know that you can disregard racial abilities and do any kind of play style with any race.

Another thing is Ysbriel, a powerful necromancer who has the ability to resurect 3,5y old discussion threads. :died:
