No, but they will damage the person attacking if part of their body passes through the ward.

It cannot block the damage like a normal shield would, but having an active ward will increase your armor by a small amount. So it will reduce damage, just not block it.

quite wrong.
OP, I've noticed that they block PROJECTILES like a physical shield would, but do nothing against melee weapons.

Mages hold up a ward, I fire an arrow and it literally shatters the ward, staggering them.

I've never noticed an NPC mage's wards do much good against my arrows either. Maybe I'm just good at making head-shots though?

Your use of the word "real" is troubling. Hopefully you aren't actually confused about the difference between fantasy and reality.

Let's sum this up. While active, wards add to 40-80 to your armor class. They are and act like magical shileds, but you can not bash with them. This shield protects you against both magical and physical damage - including arrows. It takes a small time to load and is weaker during that time. Relying on wards basically means that you will almost always be prepared to use them.

Strong enough damage will shatter the spell. In this case the ward will protect you from part of the damage, but rest will get trough.

While wards are pretty weak in physical combat, they provide excellent protection against dragons and higher level draugrs, because shouting is considered as a form of magic. While ward could not last a full dragon breath attack, shout usually forms itself from several smaller attacs. With luck, positioning and perks, mage using a proper ward may be able to avoid dragon's breath attack completely.

I gather the wards have their own "health" which regenerates while materialized, when it hits 0 the ward shatters.

Is there a situational advantage (specifically when you're turtling with minions/poison) to holding 2 wards separately instead of dualcasting?

Pure conjecture, but perhaps when against multiple spellcasters or archers? simply switch wards as they break one? instead of hoping the dualcast one holds?

Dual-casting wards is superior choise, because it skips the part when ward loads. While DC animation is slightly longer than standard one, ward powers up instantly.

Experienced caster (player, who already knows how to dual-cast fast and not derp around with it) gains a good bonus for fast casting and powerful ward.
