Cant upgrade any weapon.
Hello I just started a khajiit assassin/archer via Alternatestart and I can't upgrade any weapon, not even an iron dagger, it says you lack the required skill to upgrade this weapon. I have never experienced that before, does anyone know why?

Probably one of 4 possiblities. You lack required perk/smithing levels, you lack the materials, mods are conflicting, steam's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up again.

The only thing I recently added is SkyUI, and i've got the materials, and what perk smithing levels do I need to just upgrade an Iron Dagger? Thanks for the answer.

I think you need smithing at 10. I had the same problem with Alternate Start and it was that my smithing skill was too low. Try crafting some items at a forge.

Might be the problem thank you very much for the answer

None, as soon as you reach Riverwood, if you approach the smith, he will instruct you on how to make and upgrade an iron dagger. Steel, or higher might be a problem, but not iron weapons or armor. Any mods besides SkyUI? Have you run Boss to sort mod order?

I have other mods aswell but it worked before. And I don't think its because the mods, since I have AlternativeStart, I went a bit later do the blacksmith in riverwood. I made the Iron Dagger he told me to make, and upgrade it but I couldnt't. Thanks for the answer.

Mod placement overides mods higher placed in the list. And mod conflicts do strange things. Since there are no requirements in Smithing for upgrading except material you should be able to upgrade an iron dagger no matter how soon you try to. You couldn't do an enchanted iron dagger, but a regular one no problem. So it comes back to mods. I once had a mod for more birds, it wrecked house buldng in Hearthfire. It sadi the house was being built, but just an empty feild until by a process of elimination, I unchecked that mod in Data files. So a small particular part of your game is broken, and mods have been the cause of so many "I don't think its the mods". Btw, is this your first play through, and how many mods?

Can you upgrade the armor, just not the dagger? I am standing by my earlier statement.

Don't play alternatr start, so I will bow to someone who has. If that is so mine/buy iron, craft daggers utill you can upgrade. Or make rings.

No, it isn't. What is your Smithing skill level? If you're using anything like Character Creation Overhaul and haven't selected Smithing as a Major Skill your smithing level may be as low as 5 (not sure which other mods might do this, but I suppose theoretically any type might by accident, seeing as sometimes you get some very odd side effects from mods) in which case you will need to either buy training or make a bunch of daggers or iron or leather armour (leather stuff is probably best as you can pretty much kill wolves to your heart's content, there always seem to be more) until you get up to... I think it's 10. Then you should be able to improve things (might be 15, but I think it's 10).

I ran into this issue as well. Leveling smithing to 15 allowed me to upgrade items. Please try that KBz.
