Looking for Best Mage Companion

As said in the title,id like to know whats the best / most effective ( or just your favourite ) mage companion in the vanilla game ( DLC included,no Mods ).

J'zargo is probably the best mage buddy you can get in vanilla. He actually levels up beyond a set amount, unlike most of the other followers. Plus, he's a cat. What's better than that?

I use J'zargo myself, theres also that guy Marcurio in Riften I think, if you can stand his superiority complex. Theres also that dunmer priest of Azura if you go with Azura's Star option rather than the Black Star., there are also some more which i can't remrember just now.

J'zargo, Teldryn Sero (Dragonborn), Illia, Brelyna Maryon (sp?) is good if you like summoners. Marcurio's okay, and the only follower who doesn't moan about my doggies. Oh, and Valdimar, the Morthal housecarl (Hearthfire) is pretty cool.

Erandur? Yeah, I like him a lot, although he does mither on about how guilty he feels about his past. So long as you can ignore that (or use a mod that allows you to disable idle chatter) he's a dude.

Aranea if you choose to give her the broken Azura's Star.

On a side note:
Many warrior class followers like Vorstag loves to use destruction staves in battle even runs to loot them from dead mages but are very dumb while shooting. >_>

I've only ever used Brelyna Maryon amongst the possible mage followers. I think she's effective but sometimes her summons will block paths.

Illia is good for frost casting..ice spike and icestorm are her primaries. (For roleplaying, her character is actually a witch, or practicing witch)

Marcurio is great with single casting lightning bolt with both hands. He says he's a "master of magic", but later on when trading with him he says "I'm an Apprentice wizard". Always thought that was kinda funny.

Aranea and Erundar are good as well. They will cast fire spells for the most part.

Teldryn Sero from Solthsteim, another caster/summoner ( the one trying to "figure out" how to cast a summoning spell..)

I tend to go for a caster when on my mage. Most enemies are dead before they even get close.


Serana, of course, can't forget her.. icebolt/spike, chain lightning, drain spell and summoning spells.

If you do Solthstiem quest for the summoner heavy armor set, your followers can benifit from those rings. They will cast those 2 spells as well.

Erandur's awesome. I happen to like that his dialogue is different than that of others. He dual-wields fireballs but if you give him a pair of staffs he'll dual-wield those preferentially, and well.

I guess I was just a bit surprised that he only really seemed to have one or two idle chatter lines, having been part of a quest and all, compared to e.g. Jenassa who comes out with quite a lot of different stuff and is 'just' a mercenary. I still <3 him, though.
